Main duties of the job

The Specialist Occupational Therapist is responsible for the day-to-day professional management of all aspects of Occupational Therapy intervention to people referred to the Post Covid Syndrome Pathway within Bromley Healthcare delivered to patients either in their own homes, in the community or by virtual means. 

The post holder is expected to be a positive role model and an effective leader in terms of clinical management, patient care, communication and quality standards. The post holder is expected to be a clinical specialist in their respective field and to provide clinical management, advice, support and teaching to all relevant personnel within the organisation. 

The post holder is expected to provide a comprehensive Occupational Therapy service to the patients referred with complex multiple pathologies who exhibit a range of physical, psychological, neurological, emotional, behavioural, social problems.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide an Occupational Therapy service of the highest possible standard for those referred to the service by: 

Clinical: 

  • Triaging referrals to the Post Covid Syndrome Pathway, discussing these with the MDT to ensure all clients receive intervention from the most appropriate services. 

  • Agreeing goal orientated programmes in conjunction with the client, his/her family and other professionals involved and planning and implementing appropriate intervention. 

  • Devising rehabilitation programmes using the most up to date available evidence and guidance to enable clients to develop skills that will improve their performance and independence as well as health and wellbeing. 

  • Liaising with other health care professionals, making referrals, making recommendations where necessary to reduce the effect of disability on health and wellbeing. 

  • Participate in health promotion/education and give advice as necessary to clients and their carers. 

  • To formulate and evaluate individualised management and / or treatment plans, using clinical reasoning and utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options in order to formulate a specialised programme of care e.g. supported Self-management. 

  • Monitor client’s health and medical status; reporting any changes or deterioration to the MDT involved in the client’s care accordingly. 

  • To attend and lead the weekly MDT meetings to discuss clients. 

  • To carry a caseload of patients as an autonomous practitioner, including those with highly complex presentations, using advanced clinical reasoning skills. 

  • To provide support, supervision and delegate clinical work to Junior staff and the Therapy Assistant in order to meet needs of the client group.

Essential criteria
  • Bsc/Msc in Occupational Therapy
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate MSc in relevant field

Professional registration

Essential criteria
  • Current registration with HCPC
Desirable criteria
  • Member of RCOT

Training

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • Practice Educator training
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of studying at MSc level

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of Post Covid Syndrome and the effects on body systems
  • Excellent assessment skills
  • Knowledge of Post Covid national guidance
  • Car Driver with licence valid for UK and access to vehicle for work purposes.
Desirable criteria
  • Use of electronic patient record systems

Experience

  • Post graduate experience relevant to the service
  • Experience of managing own caseload and delegating
