Job overview
We are looking for an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with previous NHS experience in histology to join our busy Cellular Pathology service. Applicants with a completed portfolio awaiting a verification may be considered.
The post is permanent. Hours are 37.5 per week.
The department handles over 53,000 Histology samples per annum, with a high proportion of complex cases including Breast, Head and Neck,
Hepatobiliary and Urology.
Main duties of the job
Work competently across a range of manual and automated procedures, techniques and practices, according to set protocols (Specimen reception, BMS cut up, Microtomy, cryotomy, and preparing Non-gynae samples)
Train and work under supervision of specialist BMS/Senior staff in specialist areas including immunocytochemistry, dissection and non-gynae.
Following training, carry out biopsy transfer and description of category A and some category B specimens as part of BMS cut up

Aligned to national strategy, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is working 3 local Trusts to form a single Pathology Service for Lancashire and South Cumbria, hosted by Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Whilst this post is based at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, this may change in the future if services are reorganised.
Within current timelines, this post may TUPE into LTHTR as the hosting employer in late 2025.

- IBMS Specialist Portfolio / Diploma
- Experience within Non-gynae
Desirable criteria
- Digital Pathology
- Use of Lab systems – LIMS/tracking/Dictation/QMS
- Qualifications related to cellular pathology e.g. MSc, IBMS
- Working towards or plan for Specialist diploma in Cellular Pathology
