Job overview

We are seeking a dedicated Consultant Paediatrician with extensive experience and specialised training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) to join our team.  The successful candidate will hold a CCT in Paediatrics and have completed PEM training, with a proven ability to manage paediatric patients in an emergency setting.

Whilst this position does not initially require GMC specialist registration in PEM, the hospital will support the successful candidate in obtaining PEM registration via the CESR pathway, if desired.  This role offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced paediatric consultant with a focus on emergency care to make a significant impact within our hospital's paediatric emergency department.

You would be joining a 20 person EM Consultant Team working a 18 week rota which includes 7 twilight shifts over the 18 week rota.  the rest of the shifts are of varied times to cover Paediatric ED and resus for paediatric patients.

Main duties of the job

 

·         Multidisciplinary team working is key component of the working within the Trust and involves regular MDT discussions with colleagues

·         Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting

·         Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support)

·         Development of sub specialty interests that fit in with Division needs and the strategic direction of the Trust

·         Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties are required, and for contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate and continuing medical education activity

·         Provision of cover for Consultant colleagues' periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy

·         Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education

·         Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances

·         With other colleagues enable senior input into patients journey through the ED enhancing quality and Consultant 'sign off'

·         Enhance the reputation of the department through multi-disciplinary education & training and research

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical duties include duties normally expected of a Consultant working in any Paediatric ED in the UK

Leadership whilst running the shift and taking the role of Trauma or Resuscitation Team Leader for any paediatric resuscitation cases.

Reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and initial treatment of al paediatric emergencies.

Onward referral of paediatric patients as appropriate to all specialities including tertiary referral centres.

Providing supervision, teaching and support to trainees, students and other staff in the paediatric ED.

Examination, investigation, diagnosis and treatment of children. The patients remain the responsibility of the Emergency Department until they are referred to the inpatient team or discharged home

Supervision of junior / middle grade medical staff in the department during clinical PA's and availability for advice and support to staff during on-call hours

Drive improvements between the Paediatric and Emergency departments

Provide on-going training to junior and middle grade staff

Attainments

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB (or equivalent)
  • On the GMC’s Specialist Register OR within six months of CCT at the time of scheduled interview – Please note Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) applicants must be on the on the Specialist Register at the point of application
  • FRCEM
  • MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
  • APLS provider
  • Able to teach interactively in small groups
Desirable criteria
  • APLS Instructor
  • Evidence of publication
  • Training the Trainers
  • Interview Skills

Training

Essential criteria
  • Trained in Paediatric Emergency Medicine
  • Evidence of working with management and clinical colleagues to improve a service
  • Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of special interest e.g. RSI skills, simulation skills, skilled at paediatric sedation

Continuing Professional Development

Essential criteria
  • Up to date with revalidation
  • Evidence of continued CPD relevant to the role of a PEM Consultant
  • Effective leadership; ability to take responsibility and demonstrate leadership when appropriate
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrated teaching experience
