An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent Band 3 Healthcare Support worker, to work within the Diabetes service to support the Diabetes Specialist Nursing team as part of the Diabetes and Endocrinology service.
The team is friendly, motivated to learn, and there are opportunities to further your career development.  The post holder will need the ability to travel between sites in a timely manner

Main duties of the job

Main duties involve supporting the Diabetes Specialist Nurses in the management of people with diabetes, including phlebotomy and screening of people with diabetes attending appointments with the service. Delivering education to people with diabetes regarding safe self-administration of insulin, glucose monitoring including diabetes technologies.  
The post holder will need excellent communication skills and be motivated to learn new skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a diabetes healthcare support worker you will:
Be responsible for the delivery of a high standard of cost effective nursing care, as part of the diabetes nursing team, in support of and under the guidance and delegation of the Diabetes Specialist Nurses.
Ensure that people with diabetes receive safe, individualised and effective
standards of care by following care plans and treatment interventions as delegated by the Diabetes Specialist Nurses, overcoming barriers to understanding as they present.
Under delegation of the nurse in charge of the caseload, work competently and without direct supervision, within a framework that has been agreed by the Diabetes Specialist Nurses.
When accepting delegated activities it is the post holder’s responsibility to make sure that patient and public safety is not affected.
Communicate effectively at all times with people with diabetes their family and carers in conjunction with other team members, contributing to and maintaining the team philosophy.
Act as a role model for other health care support workers and student nurses.

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or working towards or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Good literacy and numerical skills.
  • Experience of working in a Health or Social care environment.
  • Car driver/car user essential
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of speciality.
  • Experience of use of IT such as EMIS/CERNER/ICE.
