Consultant Urological Surgeon with an interest in Pelvic Oncology

Consultant Urological Surgeon

The department in Blackburn is a integrated Urology outpatients, ward and offices. The Urology ward is based on B14. The dedicated Urology outpatient’s suite has facilities for flexible cystoscopies and transperineal and transrectal ultrasound and prostate biopsies. The department also has two Holmium:YAG and one Thulium-fibre laser machines that are used for endourology. In addition, there is two TULA laser machine to enable flexible cystoscopy and bladder tumour ablations procedures in the out-patient setting.

The department is an accredited cancer centre for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network where the major pelvic cancer surgery is split between East Lancashire Hospitals Trust and one other provider. The trust has three NHS commissioned da Vinci robots.

On the Burnley site there is a Urology Investigations Unit (UIU), which is a large, purpose-built unit where flexible cystoscopy, urodynamics, TULA laser ablations and perineal precision point prostate biopsy sessions, and out-patient (OP) clinics take place. Some minimally invasive prostate procedures traditionally done in theatre are now being done in the OP setting in the UIU and this will expand further. Inpatient work and day case surgery is performed in the Elective Surgical Centre. Paediatric urological surgery is also performed in Burnley. The department provides extracorporeal lithotripsy services once a month, using mobile lithotripsy providers.

Consultant Urological Surgeon - experience in pelvic oncology, robotic assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) and robotic radical cystectomy.

The Urology service at ELHT is progressive and forward thinking and these posts present an exciting opportunity to join a cohesive team of enthusiastic Urology professionals who are supported by high quality colleagues in the wider multi-disciplinary team. 

There is subspecialisation in Oncology, Endourology and functional Urology. All consultants still undertake core Urology. Andrology services are also provided but are mainly run by a Clinical Nurse Specialist. The department is an accredited cancer centre for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network where the major pelvic cancer surgery is currently split between East Lancashire Hospitals Trust and one other provider. The trust has two NHS commissioned da Vinci robots which are used for radical prostatectomies, partial and radical nephrectomies.  The trust is also a referral centre for complex stone surgery including PCNL procedures.

Applications are invited for a Consultant post in our Urology Service at ELHT.

The appointment is for a Full time Consultant Urological Surgeon on 10.2PAs working across our two base sites of RBTH and BGTH.  It is intended that the successful candidate will have an interest and proven experience in robotic, laparoscopic and open kidney cancer/benign procedures. Experience in managing common paediatric conditions at a non-specialist DGH level will be a significant advantage, as this remains an area of much demand within the Trust

Applications are invited for a Consultant post in our Urology Service at ELHT.

The appointment is for a Full-time Consultant Urological Surgeon on 10.2PAs working across our two base sites of RBTH and BGTH.  

With this appointment there will be 9 full time Urology Consultants supporting a 1:9 on-call rota with middle grade cover. The department is actively looking to expand and will be advertising at least one further substantive posts in the near future.

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via • CCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview • CESR or • European Community Rights
  • FRCS (UROL) or qualification of an equivalent level.
  • MBBS or equivalent MRCS or equivalent
  • Membership of the Royal College of surgeons or equivalent

  • Other relevant medical and non-medical training/degree
  • Other relevant postgraduate qualification

TRAINING

EXPERIENCE

  • High level of demonstrable clinical experience/interest in managing a range of core and cancer urology work in the elective and non-elective setting
  • Proven experience in robotic and open pelvic cancer procedures including robotic assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy and robotic radical cystectomy
  • Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Ability to mentor others
  • Understanding of, and experience of, performing and participating in audits during general professional or higher specialist training
  • Willingness to undertake departmental audits as requested/required
