The post holder will provide support, under the supervision of a qualified nurse, to a variety of patients needing 1-1 enhanced care, some of whom have confusion, dementia, delirium or mental health challenges.

You may be required to move around the hospital to provide care and support to the patients with the greater need. You will be expected to do all personal care for your patients, assist with meals and toileting needs, documentation, distraction therapies, activities, and encourage mobility. You will assist in planning and coordinating activities that promote active daily living for each patient as an individual or with a group of patients in a bay.

You will provide activities that have been identified through a collaborative approach that encourages the involvement of patients and their carers/family; enhancing the quality of life and mental wellbeing of patients, promoting a shorter length of stay for the patient in a hospital environment. You will work as part of a nursing/multidisciplinary team to action any assistance required to deliver fundamental care needs as they arise.

You should have excellent communication skills, be able to work independently, and be able to deal with challenging behaviour in all age groups in a calm and compassionate manner. This post will enhance patients’ experience whilst in hospital and protect them from avoidable harm. Being in hospital for these patients can be very unsettling, and with the compassionate care and communication we aim to make their experience comfortable, personalised and safe.

Previous experience of working with people living with dementia or with a cognitive impairment is essential.
