Job overview

The successful applicant will be based at Blackpool Victoria Hospital working within  the Trust’s £39 million Surgical Unit, which opened in July 2011, comprising in-patient and day-case theatre floors and elective wards. You will join a team of ten general surgeons with varying interests in either colorectal, benign upper GI and/or emergency general surgery, to provide an elective and emergency general surgical service for the Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre population.

Working for our organisation

The Blackpool Victoria Hospital serves a resident population of approximately 330,000.  There are large seasonal fluctuations in population with Blackpool and surrounding areas of the Fylde coast attracting up to 16 million visitors a year.  The Victoria Hospital is a District TEACHING General Hospital with 849 beds and serves the three surrounding boroughs of Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde. On-site is the Lancashire Cardiac Centre, a £52 million development, which opened in July 2006. This has six cardiology teams, six cardiothoracic teams, three dedicated cardiac theatres, 14 critical care beds and 89 ward beds. In July 2011, the Trust’s new Surgical Unit opened, which accommodates all elective and non-elective theatres, including three Day case theatres sited within a dedicated floor and unit. The Surgical Unit also features a dedicated urology unit and space for pre-operative assessments.

Essential criteria
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register or eligible for inclusion within 6 months of interview date
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • Primary medical qualification (MB BS or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist Interest in colorectal and/or general surgery

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Senior Registrar/SpR at Year 5/6 or equivalent training in Colorectal & General Surgery
  • Evidence of appropriate CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree (MD/PhD)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Wide general, emergency and colorectal open and laparoscopic surgical experience.
  • Ability to deal with emergency and elective colorectal and general surgical conditions

  • Experience of advanced laparoscopic techniques
  • Training in robotic colorectal surgery
