Biomedical Scientist Anticoagulation Practitioner

Anticoagulant Dosing and Advisory Service (ADAS)

BMS ANTICOAGULATION PRACTITIONER

37.5 hours between 08.45 – 17:00  Monday to Friday including Saturday mornings on rotation.
AFC Band 5 / Band 6

Applications are invited for a qualified HCPC registered Biomedical scientist to work as an Anticoagulant Specialist in the Anticoagulant Dosing and Advisory service based at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals. This is a busy, friendly team providing anticoagulation dosing advice to 4000 patients across the Fylde coast.  The post holder will be part of a multi skilled team of 40 staff working at base and also travelling out to GP surgeries and other primary care centres to provide dosage advice and warfarin/DOAC education consultations to our patients. You will need to be comfortable dealing with patients both in person and over the phone in a professional and courteous manner. A full driving license is essential, although you would not be expected to use your own transport as the department has a fleet of trust vehicles.

We use DAWN Anticoagulation software and full training will be provided within the department to manage both patients taking warfarin and DOACS.
Applicants will be considered from newly qualified band 5 Biomedical scientists with an interest in Anticoagulation which will progress, after one year, to band 6 following the completion of appropriate Anticoagulation modules and training in post.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Dosing of oral anticoagulant drugs with the assistance of a computer aided dosing system.
  • Dosing of oral anticoagulant drugs manually when required according to Anticoagulation protocols.
  • Taking appropriate action when patients are over anticoagulated, including administering Vitamin K according to Adas protocols and the PGD
  • Counseling patients regarding anticoagulant therapy and clinic attendance.
  • Reporting clinical incidents in line with Adas/trust policies.
  • Liaising with patients General practitioners in cases of poor compliance and treatment suitability.
  • Near patient testing of patient and quality control samples.

The post holder will work in the context of the Objectives of the Pathology Directorate and Blackpool Teaching Hospitals. The post holder will practice without supervision as an Anticoagulation practitioner using the DAWN AC dosing software to provide anticoagulation dosage advice and management within the community clinics. Other duties include being responsible for administration of patient database, updating patient records, safety checks and anticoagulant dosing, ensuring that the performance and reporting is carried out accurately and timely. You will be expected to assist in the development and delivery of a quality patient focused service providing advice and education to our patients.

We use DAWN Anticoagulation software and full training will be provided within the department to manage both patients taking warfarin and direct oral inhibitors, DOACS.

  • Obtaining capillary/venous blood samples for analysis.
  • Routine tasks involved in the preparation of equipment and reagents and the correct disposal of clinical waste and sharps.
  • Assist with clinical audit and quality assurance.
  • The post holder is expected to perform his/her duties in accordance with Trust and Directorate Health and Safety at work Policies.
  • The post holder is expected to ensure that a constantly high standard of care and service is maintained to patients, members of staff and the general public (in accordance with Directorate policies)
