Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology within the Maternity & Women's Services Directorate at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This post offers the opportunity to join a consultant-led Obstetrics and Gynaecology service, delivering high-quality, safe and compassionate care across obstetrics and gynaecology pathways. The successful candidate will provide senior clinical leadership in the care of women across antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal services, as well as contributing to gynaecology services in line with their skills and experience.

The role includes participation in the consultant on-call rota, providing senior decision-making for complex and high-risk cases and supporting delivery of 24-hour consultant-delivered care. The post holder will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of consultants, specialty trainees, locally employed doctors, midwives, nurses and allied health professionals in a supportive and collaborative environment.

In addition to clinical duties, the consultant will contribute to education, supervision, governance and service development, supporting continuous improvement of maternity and women's health services in line with national priorities and Trust objectives.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide consultant-led clinical care across obstetrics and gynaecology services, including antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care, labour ward activity, and gynaecology services appropriate to experience.

You will provide senior clinical leadership during on-call periods, managing complex and high-risk cases, supporting safe escalation and decision-making, and working closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure high standards of patient care and safety.

The role includes supervision and support of junior doctors, specialty trainees and locally employed doctors, contribution to teaching and training, and active participation in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activity.

The consultant will also contribute to service development, leadership initiatives and delivery of Trust and Directorate priorities.

The post holder will undertake consultant responsibilities in obstetrics and gynaecology, including clinical care, on-call duties, teaching and supervision, clinical governance, and service development. The role will be supported by a job plan aligned to service need and individual interests, with opportunities to develop leadership or subspecialty interests.

Essential criteria
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee)
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB or equivalent medical degree
  • Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG)
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree (MD/PhD)

Management Skills

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of NHS organisational structure and the core values of the NHS
  • Understanding of the management responsibilities of NHS consultants
  • Evidence of participation in a management training course

Knowledge & Research

Essential criteria
  • Advanced Labour Ward ATSM or equivalent training in obstetrics
  • Commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD), clinical governance, and audit requirements
Desirable criteria
  • ATSM aligned with the candidate’s stated special interest
  • Proven track record in self-directed research
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Effective teaching skills with the ability to train medical students, junior doctors, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively, delegate responsibilities, and supervise staff
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to take responsibility, make decisions, and inspire a multidisciplinary team
  • Evidence of involvement in service development, managing change, and implementing improvements in healthcare
Desirable criteria
  • Proficiency in IT and computer skills
  • Educational qualification or evidence of working toward one
