Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a number of Band 3 Healthcare Assistants to join our team within Surgery, Anaesthetics, Critical Care and Theatres .
We are seeking highly enthusiastic and motivated individuals, with a passion for providing excellence within patient care, to join our team to help support the multidisciplinary team in delivering high-quality, holistic care to patients undergoing orthopaedic, general, and gastrointestinal surgery. The Band 3 Health Care Assistant contributes to all stages of the surgical pathway—pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative—while also carrying out delegated clinical tasks within their scope of practice.
If successful at shortlisting applicants will be invited to an assessment centre on the 7th November which will include an introduction, the aptitude test and a formal interview.
Main duties of the job
· Clinical Support:
- Assist patients with daily personal care: hygiene, dressing, toileting, oral care, and continence needs.
- Monitor and record vital signs (NEWS2): temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation.
- Perform various additional clinical activities such as blood glucose monitoring, urinalysis, venepuncture and recording of ECGs.
- Support post-operative care, including monitoring wound sites, drain outputs, catheters, and stomas (colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy).
- Assist in mobility and rehabilitation post-orthopaedic procedures (e.g. hip/knee replacements, fracture repairs).
- Support patients with dietary needs, including post-abdominal surgery requirements (e.g. low-residue diets, enteral feeding assistance).
- Assist in pain management by reporting pain scores and responding to patient discomfort under supervision.
- Chaperone patients during investigations (e.g. endoscopy prep, wound assessments, line insertions).
- Escort patients to theatre, imaging, and other departments as required.

Health Care Assistant – Key Responsibilities and Duties
1. Working Within Scope and Supervision

Operate as part of a multidisciplinary team, carrying out delegated duties under the supervision of a registered healthcare professional.

Always act within the boundaries of your training, competence, and Trust guidelines.

Seek guidance or support from senior staff when unsure or when patient needs exceed your role.
2. Delivery of Compassionate, Person-Centred Care

Communicate effectively and compassionately with patients, families, carers, and colleagues using appropriate techniques including empathy, tact, reassurance, and persuasion.

Maintain confidentiality and dignity at all times, upholding Trust values and standards.

Contribute to patient comfort and dignity through personal care tasks such as:

Oral care, personal hygiene, and toileting support.

3. Monitoring and Responding to Patient Needs
