To assist qualified staff to meet individual patient needs, service requirements and maintain a healthy theatre environment. The Theatre Orderly will support theatres to run a safe efficient service. Although not comprehensive duties will include collecting and returning patients from ward areas, removal of waste to the disposal area. Collection and distribution of consumables, surgical trays and specimens. Assistance to the stores team within theatres, cleaning and stocking of clinical areas and equipment and changing of medical gas cylinders..

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be tasked with:

  •  the moving of patients to and from surgical theatres,
  • removal of waste,
  • collection of blood products;
  • other logistic support for the service.

The Surgical theatres at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are a busy department running a seven day service supporting a wide range of surgical specialities.

We have a friendly professional multidisciplinary team with  a dedicated Education and Training team who will facilitate induction and development of our staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 These will include but are not limited to the following tasks:

Daily Duties Including Weekends

  • Collect Golden Patient Theatre 9, and Inpatients from wards to theatre and transfer back.
  • Collect trolleys from inpatient Theatres, OSU, DSU and any other areas that are relevant. Clean trolleys and set up outside of theatres, check O2 cylinders full and regulators serviced. Replace as needed. Check which theatres require an operating trolley and place accordingly.
  • Collect beds, wedges, drip stands, HDU, ITU beds and transfer equipment, put outside theatres needing them check with recovery.
  • Bring any spare bed and leave in department for next day when available.
  • Collect and move equipment around department as needed.
  • 9am & 4:30pm (including at weekends) take specimens & collect pots (order using new sheet) specimens check TH10 stock of all sizes of histology pots and microbiology swabs. Also collect blue histology and green microbiology bags. Ensure truck is cleaned daily and clinell sticker in place.
  • Take microbiology as required asap, regularly check green bag (swabs can be sent by pod system )
  • Fridays take and collect sentinel lymph node machine.                
  • Assist in storeroom trays, re-stock, collect stores, tidy remove cardboard etc ask to Mark, Alex or Theresa to find out what needs doing.                
  • Bins to be checked regularly taken to compound 9am, 12pm, 3pm & 5pm or as required. No bins must be taken to the front lifts all must go via the back lifts/cardiac lifts. In the event this is broken please speak with co-ordinator.
  • Empty clean linen truck and keep cupboard tidy.
  • Restock recovery laundry.
  • Restock scrubs male and female changing rooms.
  • Check recovery for patients to transfer. Transfer to ward and bring back trolley or bed.
  • Collect Blood/products as required this is usually an urgent request. Ensure your training to collect blood is up to date.
  • Report faulty equipment trolleys, regulators etc, log job with Atlas and record at front desk.
  • Daily check cylinder store and replenish as needed.
  • Check Tray on desk for pending urgent jobs.
  • Deep clean of trolleys and mattress checks of all trolleys to be completed on weekly rotation. Most to be done on weekends, but when ever a trolley not in use ensure it has had a weekly deep clean and mattress check. To be recorded in the file. All orderly to undertake this task.
  • At the end of day ensure all trolleys are set up with bedding for next day and any trolleys that need plugging in are on charge.
  • Collect bed pans, urine bottles and vomit bowls as needed from stores for theatre recovery.
  • Take CD books and pharmacy orders and collect when ready.
  • Keep all mandatory training up to date.
  • Lunch break entitlement is 30minutes unpaid and must be daily recorded on the board so co-ordinator is aware of when you are on a lunch break. Phone to be left at the desk and collected at the end of your break.
  • Any uncompleted daily tasks need to be highlighted to the co-ordinator for that day.
  • All staff at end of shift need to return phone to co-ordinator.
  • All staff to adhere to health and safety and infection prevention polic

There is a regular requirement to exert moderate to intense physical effort during a shift with limited use of lifting aids.

Required to concentrate when carrying out care. Work is generally predictable but there are occasional requirement to deal with unpredictable emergency situations.

Some exposure to unpleasant conditions with blood, body fluids, and soiled linen on daily basis.
