Job overview

The successful applicant is expected to obtain high volume surgical and clinical experience from this post. At the same time the post holder will have dedicated research time that will allow carrying out and participating in high quality research, with the aim of peer-reviewed publications and national/international presentations. The Post holder will be supported for presenting their research findings (study leave, travel expenses). 
The post is ideal for junior doctors aiming to improve their CV in preparation for application to training posts. The successful applicant will work under the direct supervision of Mr CP Charalambous both with regards to clinical work and research. 
The Department has 10 Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons all of whom perform a variety of Elective and Trauma work. In addition to the advertised post, other grades include 3 Associate Specialists, 10 Staff Grades, 11 STs  and 4 FY1’s. 

Main duties of the job

a) Attendance at Theatre sessions.

b) Attendance at out-patient clinics.

c) Research

d) Provision of in-patient care for Consultant’s patients.

e) Other duties as directed by the Clinical Director for the care of

“The junior doctor accepts that he will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant, in consultation where practicable with his colleagues, both senior and junior.  It has been agreed between the professions and the Department that while juniors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptional and in particular, that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis”.

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was established on 1st December 2007. The Trust gained Teaching Hospital status and became Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2010. Education and Qualification

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice
Desirable criteria
  • BSc or equivalent

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Completion of appropriate training
  • Organisation skills, able to work in a team
  • To have experience working within an NHS hospital
  • Adequate progression of training
  • Ability to assess acute medical problems with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrates a keen interest in further study
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Orthopaedic/surgical experience at SHO level

Skills and Ability

Essential criteria
  • Punctual, reliable, competent with the independent management of basic medical and surgical problems
