Job overview

The post holder will be required to delivery and maintain Business Intelligence (BI) solutions to support the Trust information agenda to delivery key information, intelligence and data metrics.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver and maintain Business Intelligence (BI) solutions to support the Trust information agenda to deliver key information, intelligence and data metrics. 
  • Interrogate the various information systems, to produce routine and ad hoc reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Submit datasets to national collections as required.
  • Analyse data, interpret and report on results.
  • Ensure timely and accurate production of key performance indicators and other contractual data requirements.
  • Provide advice and guidance on the use of performance measures, data and statistics.
  • Contribute to working groups developing information capability to support effective decision making.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES

    

1.    In line with locally agreed policies and plans, provide a broad range of reports, data and analysis to support the work of managers, service planning and monitoring groups including Senior Leadership Team, Divisional Board and service led initiatives to support effective decision making.

2.    Provide complex specialist statistical analysis of service use data and quality metrics to identify trends and developments, aberrations and problems in data collection and presentation, work to continually improve and refine the quality of Trust information. 

3.    Develop, implement and maintain business intelligence solutions, using the relevant software and conforming to NHS standards, to deliver complex information reports in an accurate, timely and consistent manner. Coordinate and solicit input from the team of business and operational stakeholders and systems to meet specification of customers. 

4.    Lead on the development of reporting to internal stakeholders to ensure accurate, timely data is supplied to support Divisional oversight and decision making. 

5.    Encourage the use of business intelligence/information to support business planning. 

6.    Contribute to the delivery of the Trust Strategies and action plans. Form an integral part of the information team and liaise closely with other Information Management areas including Data Quality, Reporting, Database Administration, Clinical Coding and the performance team to attain the goals of the department’s strategy. 

7.    Provide support and development to department junior staff including technical training. 

8.    Develop and maintain skills in SQL, database administration and highly complex data analysis. To design highly complex data sets, BI solutions and algorithms and ensure that all data warehouse developments within the remit of the role are accurate and produced to schedule. 

9.    Monitor and maintain the implementation of the divisional data quality improvement plan and assist in the embedding of a data quality culture. 

10. Provide support and expertise for informatics systems related to the Electronic Patient Record (EPR). Propose changes to divisional and service informatics practice and implement policies as determined locally, developing information capability in response to new legislation or changing circumstances. 

11. Plan a local programme of work to progress the section business plan and amend as necessary to respond to changed circumstances and user requirements. 

12. Provide submissions and returns to local and national bodies to meet expectations of information provision. 

13. Provide advice and guidance to ensure that staff are competent to maximise system functionality and enhance data quality/reporting. 

14. Be responsive to service user requests for assistance. 

15. Such other duties as may be assigned commensurate with the post/band.

Person specification

Essential and Desireable

Essential criteria
  • Good level of general education
  • Relevant degree or equivalent i.e. Information or related area
  • Significant experience in Informatics in a large/complex organisation
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel
  • Experience of writing and maintaining SQL scripts
  • Relevant experience of business intelligence software
  • Ability to learn and apply programming skills
  • Demonstrable skills in business intelligence software
  • Excellent numeracy and statistical methods skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Flexible approach to working hours
  • Ability to work as part of a team to work on own
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate diploma or equivalent in Information or related area
  • ECDL or equivalent
  • Evidence of professional and/or personal development
  • Experience of NHS information systems and use of information across the NHS (Acute and/or Community)
  • Knowledge of relational database theory
  • Knowledge of Acute Hospital information systems (e.g. PAS)
  • Knowledge of Community Services information systems (e.g. EMIS Web Community)
  • Knowledge of statistical publication, monitoring and metrics
  • Ability to read, comprehend and advise on national policy and guidance
  • Project Management Skills
