Would you like to join an energetic, committed and friendly team to help early detection and prevention of bowel cancer?

We are looking to recruit 2 Specialist Screening Practitioners (SSP) to join our dedicated and brilliant nursing team.  As a programme we are building for the future and the implementation of FIT @80 in 2027 by lowering the abnormal FIT threshold, and therefore inviting more participants for further investigations.  We are now screening our population from age 50 and provide ongoing 2 yearly screening for patients with Lynch syndrome.  We pride ourselves on exceptional patient experience, and as we continue to move towards our ambitious strategy, we require a motivated professionals with excellent clinical and interpersonal skills to join us

Main duties of the job

You will work closely with a team of SSP’s and administrators with support guidance and supervision from the Deputy and Lead SSP.  The role will require you to apply advanced expert clinical knowledge and experience alongside evidence based decision making skills to support patients taking part in the programme

You will act as the patients’ advocate supporting them to navigate the programme and make informed choices at all stages of the pathway.  Utilising specialist knowledge and advanced communication and interpersonal skills when supporting patients and their families and carers. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Experience of working within Endoscopy/Colorectal/Gastroenterology or Lower GI Cancer is essential along with caseload management skills.   

Right now, public awareness of bowel cancer is growing rapidly, and alongside this is the expansion of the programme, making it an important time to join us.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Health Care Practitioner
  • Relevant post registration Health related degree or working towards post registration specialist qualifications
  • Evidence of continued learning and recent professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Mentorship / assessor qualification
  • Certificate of Professional Development, Specialist Bowel Cancer Screening
  • Additional qualifications in specific area (EG; advanced communication, BCSS training, gastroenterology, endoscopy, cancer)
  • Counselling Course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience working within colorectal/gastroenterology/cancer/ endoscopy (or equivalent specialist practice experience)
  • Experience of health promotion
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and current events relating to cancer services
  • Experience in Endoscopy services, or Pre- operative assessment or other role requiring history taking and assessment skills

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and risk management
  • Understanding of the importance of equality, diversity and rights in patient care
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Health Promotion strategies
  • Knowledge of Lynch syndrome and other associated colorectal conditions

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Articulate with advanced written and oral communication skills with the ability to respond to different communication needs of patients in a variety of settings
  • Understanding of the consent process and associated legislation
  • Examples of effective team working with evidence of leadership skills with the ability to motivate all staff groups
  • Analytical, with enquiry / problem solving skills and the ability to make decisions and prioritise own workload
  • Computer literate and the ability to maintain accurate records
Desirable criteria
  • Presentation skills
  • Experience in developing and participating in service development and implementation of change in clinical practice
  • Able to obtain informed consent for endoscopy
  • Experience of research and audit
  • ECDL / equivalent ICT qualification
