Biomedical Scientist / Healthcare Scientist
Applications are invited from highly motivated Biomedical Scientists / Healthcare Scientists for a permanent post in the Blood Sciences Laboratories at the Royal Bolton Hospital.
We will accept applications from students who are currently in the process of applying for their HCPC registration (completion must be within the next month)
Bolton NHS Foundation Trust is an integrated care organisation providing patient care in the community at health centres, clinics and the hospital.
The post holder will contribute within the Blood Sciences (Clinical Chemistry) laboratories as a Biomedical Scientist, in the provision of a high quality cost effective clinical service and the development of the service in line with departmental objectives.
To perform routine and specialist procedures involving scientific, technical, and interpretive work to aid clinicians in the effective diagnosis and treatment of patients.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join our friendly team of experienced Biomedical Scientists and support staff rotating through all sections of our busy Clinical Chemistry laboratories.
The laboratories are well equipped (Roche modular 8000, Diasorin Liaison XL, Sebia Minicap and Hydrasys), fully computerised (Clinisys Winpath system), fully UKAS accredited and HCPC/IBMS approved for training. The Blood Sciences Laboratories processes around 900,000 patient samples per year.
The department operates an out of hours service (24 hour working – 7 days per week) in which you will be required to participate. Payment for ‘out of hours’ working is at Agenda for Change rates. Flexibility to cover for absent colleagues will be expected.
You will be encouraged and supported to participate in further education, training and Continuing Professional Development, including IBMS Specialist Portfolio.

Qualifications & Registration
Essential criteria
- Nearly/Fully registered Biomedical Scientist with the Health Professions Council (HCPC)
- BSc(hons) Biomedical Science (or equivalent acceptable to the IBMS/HCPC).
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of recent attendance at specialist and relevant courses.
- Expressed interest in working on Specialist Portfolio in Clinical Chemistry
Experience
Essential criteria
- Training/supervision of subordinate staff.
- Experience of Clinical Chemistry laboratory automation
- Experience in use of IT systems
- Recent experience in NHS laboratory
Desirable criteria
- Recent experience in busy Chemistry department
- Recent experience in ‘out of hours’ working within Chemistry department
- Experience in a wide variety of techniques within Clinical Chemistry
- Experience of working on equipment in use at Bolton (Roche / Diasorin)
