Job overview
To work as a member of the maternity team, under the direction and supervision of the midwife. The maternity care assistant is accountable to the midwife and will be supervised by the midwife either directly or indirectly whilst on duty.
• Promote a friendly, caring environment and actively work within the multidisciplinary team.
• Promote the philosophy of respect, for varied cultural, physical and spiritual needs of mothers.
• Act as a role model for practice, respecting both the privacy and dignity of mothers and their families
• Prepare rooms and ensure the environment is welcoming
• Assist mothers with baby care, including nappy changing, bathing and feeding.
• Assist mother with her personal hygiene needs, including bathing and bed making.
• Be able to recognise deviations from normal in the condition of both mother and baby and report findings to the midwife in charge.
Main duties of the job
The shift pattern will be working day and night shifts, Monday to Sunday including bank holidays
Ideally the applicant has experience within the NHS and hold a BTEC Level 3 or equivalent or be willing to work towards this.
You will work under the direct/indirect supervision of a registered midwife; when undertaking delegated nursing and non-nursing duties for women, and their families.

• Develops and maintains positive relationships, respects the woman’s and her families’ wishes, with kindness, compassion and empathy.
Recognises the Maternity Care Assistants scope of practice within national frameworks and demonstrating NHS Constitution values, asking for guidance when unsure. This will ensure they are working within their competency, demonstrate a professional manner and guarantee care planning is in line with national and local guidance to avoid harm.
• Understands main principles of team working and can define their own role and role of others.
