 A GP with Special Interest in Geriatric Medicine

We are seeking a GP with drive, commitment and enthusiasm who will bring clinical leadership to our multidisciplinary teams and provide high quality care to our patients.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who will bring their skills, knowledge and experience to our existing teams, in the continued development of the Medicine for Older People department. You will work closely with colleagues across specialties and community services. Clinical governance, education, training and research are important to us, and successful candidates will have ample opportunity to contribute.

Candidates with areas of clinical special interest will be welcomed and such skills and knowledge will be accommodated whenever possible. This is a flexible part time post aimed at those wishing to explore an alternative work life balance. Main duties of the job

We wish to appoint a part time (6 PA) GP with special interest in Frailty to join our Community and Intermediate Care team  at East Lancashire Hospitals Trust. Core to this post will be a desire to work collaboratively with community services.

As a senior employee of our Trust you will work in close co-operation with and support not just other clinical professionals but also our managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to our patients. 

Working for our organisation

The succesful candidate will work across the Intermediate Care Wards based at Burnley General Hospital.   The directorate is currently in the process of developing and strengthening its frailty pathway, ensuring patients are provided with the correct standard of care in the right environment.  

The Division also provides Orthogeriatric support for the fractured neck of femur pathway as well as a comprehensive service for older patients both in hospital and in the surrounding community.  Cross divisional liaison and MDT working are key to this role to enable our patients to benefit from the full range of support services available , for example  integrated acute services and designated older persons’ out-patient clinics. Including, Frailty rapid assessment, Parkinson’s, TIA and elderly medicine outpatient clinics are also provided

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide hands-on evidence based care for medical  patients under his/her care, ensuring the timely development of appropriate clinical management plans.
  • To provide continued clinical responsibility for the patients under his/her care in conjunction with colleagues.
  • To be part of the MDT on designated community wards and support discharge planning.
  • To develop and promote services that minimise hospital stay and maximise opportunities for recovery and independent living.
  • To take a shared role in the development of the  service, in conjunction with the management team and consultant colleagues 
  • To take part in agreed provision of cover for consultant colleagues during leave.
  • To participate in medical audit and clinical governance.
  • To provide professional supervision, direction and training to junior medical staff.
  • To participate in postgraduate teaching programmes
  • To participate in postgraduate training and other staff teaching as appropriate
  • To attend Directorate meetings as required 
  • To develop and support sub-acute rehabilitation for geriatric patients in community hospitals and community settings.
  • To support clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements within the parameters of the directorate’s and Trusts agreed objectives.

Person specification

Attainments / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with General Medical Council
  • Completion of general practice training
Desirable criteria
  • A higher degree such as MD, MSc, PhD or equivalent.

Training

Essential criteria
  • • Experience in teaching under-graduates, post-graduates, nurses and professions allied to medicine
  • Able to operate within a teaching/training culture
  • Experience of clinical audit and understanding of the process
Desirable criteria
  • Willing to supervise other staff, spots talent & nurtures it
  • Evidence of teaching experience

Essential criteria
  • Understands the issues of risk management & of operating within a litigious & complaints culture
  • Shows self-discipline e.g. record-keeping & legibility
  • Able to juggle a large number of demands by setting priorities & planning effectively

  • Membership of appropriate post graduate societies.

  • Able to travel to meet the requirements of the post
  • Satisfactory medical clearance from the Trust’s Occupational Health Physician
  • Free from disabilities or illness that would prevent clinical management of patients.
  • Immunised against Hepatitis B
