Job overview

To assist in the provision of quality evidence based practice, within a busy A/E department and Acute wards. Providing advice; support and care, liaising with other agencies under the guidance of the Mental Health Liaison Nurses for Service Users and their families who present often in a distressed state with complex mental health needs and Social difficulties .

This applies to roles paid in accordance with NHS pay bands, meaning entry-level Band 3 positions no longer meet the criteria for sponsorship.

As a member of the Mental Health Liaison Team the post holder will be expected to support service within the below areas- 

•    Emergency Department
•    Urgent Care Centres
•    Medical assessment areas
•    All wards, departments and clinical teams across the hospital

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Patients may present with a wide range of mental health and psychological problems, including following an episode of self-harm, psychiatric emergency and as a consequence of physical illness.  You will be expected to work with individuals experiencing psychosomatic disorders and a variety of psychological and adjustment issues resulting from physical illness.  

This involves-

To participate in and assist the MDT in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the evidence based care required, including health promotion. Participate and assist in on-going assessments, Care Programme Approach and care plans.

To assist in conducting clinical risk assessment of service users, help to identify early signs of relapse by monitoring the client’s progress, providing effective advice, guidance, and decision making process.  Reporting and recording any changes in service user’s mental/physical/emotional state to qualified staff culminating in the coordination of any reviewed plan of care.ontribute Mental Health Liaison (MHL) information and deliver feedback to the team, inpatient ward reviews, case conferences without the need for direct supervision.

To assist in clinical and medical reviews of service users.

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience in mental health care or relevant NVQ level 3 qualification
  • To undertake a specialist package of training which will equip the post holder to work safely and effectively in this functionalised setting

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Able to read, write and communicate clearly to a MDT or service user/carer or other professional agencies
  • Ability to work with service users and their families/carers in a non-discriminatory ant-oppressive way
  • Experience in a mental health setting in a supportive role with service users
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team
