Job overview

The Ward Clerk plays a key role in the effective and safe running of the Surgical Assessment Unit by providing comprehensive administrative and clerical support. Working at the centre of a fast‑paced, high‑turnover clinical environment, the post holder acts as the main point of contact for patients, relatives, and the multidisciplinary team.
 
As the first point of contact for many patients and relatives, you will help set the tone for their care journey—providing reassurance, clear communication and a welcoming presence.

Main duties of the job

The Ward Clerk is responsible for managing patient administration processes including admissions, transfers, discharges, and the maintenance of accurate patient records across electronic and paper systems. They support patient flow by coordinating communication with wards, theatres, diagnostics, bed management, and support services, ensuring timely progression of care.

Main responsibilities include coordinating patient admissions, transfers and discharges; maintaining accurate electronic and paper patient records; managing telephone and face‑to‑face enquiries from staff, patients and relatives; and acting as a central communication link between the multidisciplinary team, diagnostics, theatres and support services. The role requires effective prioritisation, attention to detail and a calm, professional approach in a fast‑paced environment, ensuring patient flow is maintained and clinical staff are supported to deliver safe, timely care.
