Job overview
This post is for a Senior Clinical Fellow - ST4(+) level - in Simulation and Emergency Medicine at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Emergency Medicine Services at Preston and Chorley are unified under a single Directorate. The successful candidate will be expected to work on both sites.
This post is fixed term for 12 months. The post will be split 60:40 between clinical duties and simulation activity. This is a full time post, however applications from candidates seeking a part time post will be considered.
This fellowship will introduce the successful applicant to the field of Simulation Based Medical Education. The applicant will be supported in contributing to Postgraduate Medical Educational teaching, research, and curricula development projects with a view to improving existing educational practice and developing new skills. The successful candidate will be supported in producing updates on research and project progress/outcomes via the publication of articles and the delivery of presentations/posters at internal LTHTr groups and at external conferences.
Main duties of the job
Clinical duties will include all those duties normally expected of a Senior Clinical Fellow/Specialty Trainee in Emergency Medicine (equivalent to ST4, and above) in the UK, and will account for the majority of the appointee’s time (60%). This time will include the shop floor supervision and teaching of junior doctors during clinical shifts. In addition the appointee will be expected to take part in the formal teaching and on-going audit programmes within the directorate as well as a full range of management duties commensurate with this role.
The remaining 40% of this post is dedicated to Simulation Based Medical Education.
Senior Clinical Fellow in Simulation duties will include:-
· Supporting and developing Medical Education and Simulation activity
· Develop simulation scenarios and courses
· Facilitate and deliver Simulation Centre courses
· Facilitate and deliver in-situ Simulation in the Emergency Department
· Participate in research in Simulation

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
- MBBS or equivalent (primary medical degree as recognised by the GMC)
- Certification in ALS and at least one of: APLS, ATLS/ETC
Desirable criteria
- Higher qualification: FRCEM (Primary), FRCEM (Intermediate), MRCS, MRCP, etc.
- Instructor status in ALS, ATLS, APLS, etc.
Experience
Essential criteria
- 4 years of postgraduate medical experience/training of which at least 12 months must be in Emergency Medicine (at least 6 months of this should be in the UK in a training or middle grade post at ST3 level or above)
- Ability to initiate appropriate initial management in common emergencies and to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement.
- Must not have been out of clinical practice for longer than 2 years.
Desirable criteria
- Wider ability in patient evaluation and a working knowledge of minor illnesses and injuries
- Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses
