Consultant General & Colorectal Surgeon

Consultant

Trosolwg o'r swydd

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Colorectal Surgeon on a permanent contract.

The successful candidate will join an established and cohesive GI Team of 11 Colorectal and 11 Upper GI surgeons in a busy teaching hospital and major trauma centre.

You will be one of 22 Consultant General Surgeons working across the two hospital sites at Preston and Chorley and will be expected to maintain a practice in general colorectal surgery and emergency general surgery.

The unit is a tertiary referral centre for anal cancer, early rectal cancer and the multidisciplinary management of advanced pelvic malignancy.

There is in addition a sub-specialty practice in robotic surgery, pelvic floor surgery and advanced colonoscopy. An established IBD MDT compliments the colorectal and anal cancer MDTs.

The surgical directorate also incorporates a full range of vascular and urology services and is the regional centre for Upper GI Cancer and Vascular Surgery.

The post holder will:

  • Conduct theatre lists, clinics and endoscopy sessions and participate in the ward care of colorectal and emergency surgery patients.
  • Take an active role in the management of all colorectal diseases including pelvic floor disorders, colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, and form part of the team providing surgical support to the gastroenterology department.
  • Take part in a 1 in 20 on call rota for general surgery, based at the Royal Preston Hospital site. The 20 GI surgeons will form the general surgical on call rota, working a “consultant of the week” system, with on call periods from Friday morning to Monday morning, and Monday to Friday on a different week. There is an additional 1:10 sub-specialty weekend ward cover rota which includes a daily ward round of patients under the care of the colorectal team and providing support to the on-call surgeon on colorectal emergencies.
  • Take part in the cancer MDT
  • Take part in management of Major Trauma. LTHTR is a regional Major Trauma Centre. Supporting this is a consultant-led trauma team and the successful candidate will be part of this team during the day-time and provide out of hours support as required when on-call.

Gweithio i'n sefydliad

The Royal Preston Hospital is the regional centre for anal cancer, early rectal cancer and advanced pelvic malignancy and a separate subsection of the MDT meeting is dedicated to these patients. The cancer MDT meets once each week.

We have a tertiary IBD service and weekly ileoanal pouch clinic and joint medical/surgical clinics, and the inflammatory bowel MDT meets once per month.

Around 200 major colorectal resections are performed each year.  Radiology support is excellent and PET-CT with cyclotron facilities are available on site as well as full oncology and radiotherapy services. We would encourage candidates to develop their subspecialty interest and contribute to the development of these tertiary services.

An established interest in surgical education/training would also be desirable.

There is a strong undergraduate department with links to the University of Manchester with a large cohort of medical students placed in the hospital from their 3rd to 5th year.

We have an excellent track record in postgraduate surgical education having co-ordinate the regional SpR teaching programme over a 14 years period.

The department is committed to research and is actively involved in several national surgical trials. In addition, we are involved in a joint PhD collaboration with the Christie Hospital, supervising an out of programme specialist trainee.
