Job overview
The post is part of the specialist urogynaecology nursing service for women with pelvic floor and bladder dysfunction and will work alongside the Urogynaecology Consultant and deliver care according to NICE Clinical Guideline Urinary Incontinence 2013 (CG171).
The post holder will provide specialist clinical expertise in all aspects of care for urogynaecology patients, together with the Urogynaecology Consultant and members of the wider clinical team.
The post holder will effectively co-ordinate and deliver an expert nursing service within the specialist area and manage their own nurse-led outpatient service and case load (including vaginal pessary, bladder retraining, patient education/catheter care, Trial without catheter (TWOC), management of prolapse & medication reviews, urodynamic diagnostic clinics & flexible cystoscopies (following appropriate training and assessment) and post operative assessment) and in collaboration with the urogynaecology team advise on appropriate treatment plans.
The post holder will ensure a positive impact on the experience of patients and carers as well as developing evidence based clinical nursing practice in line with current research and guidelines
This post is a fixed term / secondment opportunity to cover the existing post holder secondment to another role.
band 6 development post would be considered.
Main duties of the job
The purpose of the post is to contribute to a specialist urogynaecology nursing service for women with pelvic floor and bladder dysfunction alongside the existing Urogynaecology Nursing staff, Urogynaecology Consultants, and the rest of the multidisciplinary team
The Urogynaecology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will work closely with the Urogynaecology Consultant Team to deliver care according to current National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecology (RCOG) and British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG) guidance, thereby supporting the service to expand and develop further.

You will work alongside a broad team of specialist nurses, consultants, operational and clinical leaders within the speciality of gynaecology based at the Royal Preston Hospital in the dedicated gynaecology outpatient suite.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· triage all incoming referrals to the service
· Provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients, families, carers and other Healthcare Professionals following diagnosis and through treatment
· Ensure continuity of high quality evidence based nursing care, including assessing health and nursing needs of patients, families and carers.
· Identify and initiate appropriate effective care, including;
-Managing a patient case load
-Ordering and performing diagnostic tests
-Making referrals to appropriate specialities for onward treatment as required
-Admitting and discharging women with continence needs within agreed protocols
· Undertake outpatient clinics for nurse-led pessary / urodynamic diagnostics / pelvic floor and incontinence clinic / support group / post-operative follow up clinic.
· Ensure the BSUG database is kept up to date to enable accreditation of service.
· Work within UKCS Pessary Guidelines and urodynamic standards.
· Accept responsibility for own patient caseload, ensuring all patients have an accurate plan of care, which reflects the assessment undertaken and incorporates the issues and recommendations made, ensuring clear documentation in the patient’s records, including outcome letters sent to patients GP surgery.
· Perform urodynamic studies and potentially other invasive procedures (such as flexible cystoscopies) independently and in collaboration with the urogynaecology clinicians, advise on appropriate treatment plans
· To be actively involved in inpatient care, liaising with ward staff to ensure high-quality nursing care including support of timely discharge of post-op patients and ensuring follow up care to appropriate urogynae clinic is arranged.
· To follow up patients as appropriate and ensure all relevant information is available to enable patients to make an informed choice about their treatment.
- · To attend, coordinate and contribute to multi-disciplinary team meetings, ensuring all relevant patients are represented.
- · To deliver a seamless service through the development of enhanced multi-disciplinary team processes and communication.
- · To participate in the identification and development of clinical protocols and strategies to enhance both the continuity and standard of urogynaecological care whilst ensuring equity of access to the service.
- Demonstrate clinical skills and expertise to all grades of staff, including junior medical staff. Review and evaluate care given by other team members, ensuring that realistic goals are set to achieve optimal outcome.
- Act as a role model and clinical leader, demonstrating knowledge and research-based best practice.
· Identify safeguarding and vulnerable adult issues which affect the rights of individuals
- Develop appropriate clinical skills related to specialist practice- such as pessary insertion, urodynamics, continence assessment, menopause assessment
- · To work with key staff members to deliver nurse-led assessment and outpatient follow-up services, providing detailed baseline patient assessment and education and support to patients and their families.
· To work with the multi-disciplinary team to develop, implement and evaluate integrated care pathways and systems of multi-disciplinary team documentation
- · To liaise with local community, social services and voluntary organisations in order to develop existing services for clients, carers and health professionals.
- · To involve service users actively in providing feedback of their experience of the current service and suggestions for improvements.
- · To participate in the development of appropriate patient group directives to facilitate and enhance the discharge process.
- · To ensure all patients are fully informed of the risks and benefits of proposed procedures and treatments, contributing to the process of securing informed consent.
- · To produce and provide to all patients relevant and accessible written information regarding their treatment in accordance with Trust standards.

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
- NMC registered adult nurse
- Relevant nursing degree level 6
- Evidence of up to date and relevant continuous professional development
- Masters Degree in relevant subject area (or wiling to work toward)
- Non-Medical Prescriber (or willing to work toward)
Desirable criteria
- Post graduate qualification in urgoynae or willing to work toward
- Leadership & management qualification
- Teaching / Mentorship qualification
- Cervical Cytology (Smear taker) qualification
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive relevant and demonstrable clinical experience pertinent to speciality area
- up-to-date knowledge of issues affecting gynaecology patients
- Relevant gynaecological or urological experience
- Experience of a nurse-led service and ability to manage a case load of patients independently with indirect supervision
- Experience of autonomous planning, implementing and reviewing treatment plans within a specialist area
- Evidence of working at a senior nursing level
