Job overview
This post has arisen for a Locum Consultant Radiologist within Clinical Radiology at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, to support general radiology with interest in gynaecology and gastrointestinal imaging. This post will be for 6 months initially.
The successful candidate will assist in the smooth running of the Directorate and with colleagues in the provision of an effective and efficient service.
The post will be based at both Chorley & Ribble District Hospital and Preston Hospital sites, and there will also be some sub-specialty sessions at our new Community Diagnostic Centre in Preston, (the postholder must live within 45 minutes' drive of Preston Hospital).
The post holder will be expected to take part in the management of the service and attend meetings of the Diagnostic Imaging Directorate, the Medical Staffing Committee, and such other committees he/she may be appointed to by clinical colleagues. The post holder may be expected to attend meetings convened by management, which directly affect the work of his/her department.
Opportunities to develop or maintain other subspecialist interests will also be supported.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be expected to provide cross sectional imaging reporting and support for various MDT’s. The post will involve 10-programmed activities of imaging support (8 DPAs plus 1.5 SPAs and 0.6 for on-call).
Specific duties will vary according to subspecialty, in general duties will include: -
- Management of the department to maintain efficient and timely patient flow with specific reference to both local and national targets.
- Assist consultant staff in maintaining staffing levels including covering short term sickness
- Close liaison with nursing, medical and radiographic staff to ensure patient care is maintained and all trust policies and procedures are adhered to.
- The appointee will be required to take an active role in the teaching of junior doctors and be involved in the training of all staff, and to take an active role in audit.
- Other duties which may be allocated by senior staff to ensure the proper care of patients and management of the departments.
- Support, teaching and experience will be provided for career development as appropriate.
The post holder may be expected to attend meetings convened by management, which directly affect the work of his/her department.
Participation and registration for these activities with the Royal College of Radiologists are a condition of this post.
Working for our organisation
Our clinical services are structured into three divisions, the divisions of Medicine, Surgery and Diagnostic and clinical support. Within each division sits a number of clinical specialties.
Each of our divisions is headed by a divisional director, and each has its own divisional medical director and head of nursing, a number of clinical directors, matrons and other manager’s support the delivery of services within each division and each clinical specialty.
The Radiology Specialty unit is managed within the Clinical Directorate structure and sits within the division of Diagnostics, Clinical Support and Performance.
The Radiology Directorate comprises Radiology, Neuroradiology, Ultrasound, Vascular and non-Vascular Interventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, including SPECT scanning and Oncological Radiology. Mammography is performed at the Chorley and South Ribble Hospital site. With a mix of MRI, CT & U/S services now also provided at Healthport.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice in UK
- MBBS or equivalent
- FRCR or equivalent
- CCST in Radiology or eligible registration equivalents
- CCT within 6 months
- PLAB or equivalent standards
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree / PHD / Masters
- Membership of Specialist Radiological Societies
Experience & Skills
Essential criteria
- Wide experience in cross-sectional radiology and Gynae/GI
- The ability to work / report independently
- Experience in audit
- IT and computing skills
- Evidence of participation in and commitment to, teaching. The ability to train and supervise junior medical staff and medical students
- Understanding current NHS management systems including clinical Governance and Risk management
Desirable criteria
- Proven ability to lead radiology discussion within sub-specialty MDTs
- Experience, evidence of body cross sectional and PET reporting.
- Experience, evidence in Oncology
- Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses and Evidence of commitment to audit
- Previous participation in a management role
- GCP certification
