Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Subspeciality Fellow in Gynaecology Oncology (ST6 or above level) within the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialty at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Prior experience in obstetrics and gynaecology is essential for this post.

The post is a 2-year contract with the prospect of extending to 3 years if required.

Lancashire Teaching Hospital is a large teaching hospital closely linked with the University of Manchester. The successful candidate will contribute to the on call rota as negotiated between themselves and the department, dependant on outstanding training needs of the candidate

Main duties of the job

The Sub-Speciality Fellow in Gynaecological Oncology will work in the Department of Gynaecological Oncology, based at the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust under supervision of Mr Georgios Angelopoulos (STPS) and Mr Nick Wood (Deputy STPS). The post offers a comprehensive programme in Gynaecological Oncology and should qualify the candidate for a consultant appointment in the subspecialty.

Candidates who have previous research experience in Gynaecological Oncology may apply to the RCOG Sub-specialty Board for research exemption although regardless a continuing commitment to clinical research will be expected and actively encouraged.

Please note: All applicants must hold a National Training Number (NTN) in order to be able to be eligible for this post

The Gynaecological Oncology service includes five Gynaecological Oncology consultants.

Weekly MDT meetings are held with clinical and medical oncology together with radiology and pathology colleagues on a Thursday morning, there is complex MDT with involvement of colorectal and urology colleagues.

As a valued member of the team, you will be included in the educational and training activities of the unit and encouraged to contribute to the teaching of nurses, midwives and medical students.

LTHTR is a teaching hospital serving a local population of 450,000 across Greater Preston,  Chorley and South Ribble.  

 

In gynaecology we provide tertiary gynaecological oncology services for Lancashire and South Cumbria with a specialist team of gynaecology oncologists and host the weekly regional tertiary MDT.

 

We also provide services in benign gynaecology, early pregnancy, endometriosis, urogynaecology, ambulatory, menopause, paediatric, endocrine disorders, colposcopy, vulval conditions and termination of pregnancy.

 

The Trust also delivers regional services in neurosciences (neurosurgery and neurology), plastic surgery, renal medicine, vascular surgery, interventional radiology and hosts the regional trauma centre.

Academic/research

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates understanding of basic science research or clinical trial methodology
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of academic prizes or honours at postgraduate level.
  • Demonstrable output from previous research experience. Evidence of relevant peer reviewed papers and other publications (e.g. book chapter, book editor, case reports), within chosen sub- specialty
  • Presentations (oral or poster) at international, national or regional meetings.
  • Completion or near completion of : • MD/PhD thesis • Advanced Professional Module in Clinical Research Completion of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training
  • Attendance at course on research methodology, statistics or evidence based medicine.

Management

Essential criteria
  • Relevant contribution to management within obstetrics and gynaecology (rotas, committees, etc.).
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at a medical management course.
  • High quality output evident from management activities

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCOG
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of distinction at university or postgraduate examinations. Evidence of further advanced clinical training in relevant sub-specialties (e.g. ATSM, ASM, Diplomas).
  • Evidence further training in research, such as • Higher degree (MD/PhD) in relevant subspecialty
  • Advanced Professional Module (APM) in Clinical Research.
  • Advanced Training Skills Module (ATSM) in Gynaecological Oncology
  • BSCCP or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Completion of a minimum of 5 years of specialty training in obstetrics and gynaecology at time of appointment i.e. equivalent to ST6/7 with successful ARCPs (or CCT in O&G post-dependent)
  • Experience of dealing with complex obstetrics and gynaecology emergencies.
  • Comprehensive general training and experience of working in busy obstetrics and gynaecology unit at senior level of training (>5000 deliveries) with solid basic surgical skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of RCOG intermediate gynaecology ultrasound module or equivalent.
  • Registered for BSCCP colposcopy training.
  • Good progress or completion of ATSM or equivalent.
  • Intermediate or advanced skills in transvaginal gynaecology ultrasound.
