Job overview

Consultant in General Paediatrics with Special Interest in Respiratory Medicine

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant in General Paediatrics with a Special Interest in Respiratory Medicine.

The successful candidate will provide consultant-led care across acute, inpatient and ambulatory paediatric services and participate in the paediatric on-call rota. They will support the development and delivery of specialist respiratory services, providing high-quality care in line with national standards.

The post holder will have expertise in managing paediatric respiratory conditions, including asthma, recurrent wheeze, chronic cough, bronchiectasis and sleep-disordered breathing. Working within a multidisciplinary team, they will collaborate with specialist nurses, allied health professionals, primary care and tertiary centres to deliver integrated care and improve patient outcomes.

The role includes service development, clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and teaching responsibilities, contributing to the ongoing enhancement and sustainability of respiratory services.

As a teaching Trust, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals offers excellent opportunities for professional development, education, research and leadership. This is an opportunity to help shape respiratory and general paediatric services for children and young people across Lancashire and South Cumbria.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work as part of a team of 10 acute paediatric consultants, with a rota which will become 1 in 10 once recruitment is complete. There is a hot week system in which the consultant of the week is on call for general paediatrics and clinics are cancelled for that week. During the on call week the consultant attends daily handovers, carries out ward rounds and attends emergencies when required in ED, PAU or the ward. They are also expected to carry out safeguarding medicals at the request of police or social services and write reports.

There will be outpatient clinics in Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley District Hospital. These clinics include new and follow up general paediatrics and specialty clinics. There is small proportion of resident on calls for the post-holder, which are outlined in the job plan. The resident shifts will be 5 weekday evening shifts over a 10 week period and this is equitably shared by all the acute paediatric consultants. The resident shift is to cover the Paediatric Assessment Unit along with Junior and Middle grade doctors. This will enable presence of Consultant in Paediatric assessment unit at the busiest time of the day. This post does not include any neonatal cover.
