Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) is looking to recruit a forward-thinking and motivated individual, with an interest in Acute Medicine, to join our team of Critical Care Consultants.  This post presents an excellent opportunity for an experienced clinician with a comprehensive understanding of Critical Care and Acute Medicine to join our dynamic team committed to the delivery of the highest standard of care.

Our Critical Care service is an integral part of the Surgical Division, providing level 2 and 3 care across the Trust.  The Acute Medicine service is an integral part of the Trust’s Medicine Division, providing care for a range of acutely unwell patients across our Acute Assessment Units and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan.

The successful applicants will join colleagues to continue the exciting developments improving the delivery of care to these acutely unwell medical patients within the settings of Critical Care, our Emergency Department, Medical Assessment Unit or SDEC.  

 

 

Main duties of the job

A new post in Critical Care with an interest in Acute Medicine has been created to support acutely ill medical patients presenting to the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. The successful applicant will join colleagues to continue the exciting developments improving the delivery of emergency and critical care to these acutely ill patients, both within the settings of the Emergency Floor and Intensive Care Unit.

On-Call

Please note that the post holder will be expected to participate in the Critical Care on-call rota.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder will perform all the duties and have all responsibilities of a Consultant Intensivist / Acute Physician. 

  • The successful applicants will join colleagues to continue the development of improved delivery of emergency care to the acutely ill patient within the settings of the Emergency Floor and Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.
  • This post may involve the review of medical patients in assessment wards (MAU and Lowton), acute medical take (A&E in reach), and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit.
  • This post will involve part of the week working on the Intensive Care Unit, and full participation in the Intensive Care on-call rota (currently 1:8 with 2PAs allocated to on-call and a 5% on-call supplement)
  • Each day, in either area, there is a formal morning ward round of all patients by acute physicians / intensivists. Throughout the day patients are reviewed as they arrive with the junior doctors.
  • The acute physicians also provide senior cover for the Same Day Emergency Care area that accepts ambulatory GP referrals direct to an organised clinic environment.
  • The acute physicians are part of a large team providing unscheduled care and are supported by the general physicians in overnight on call and weekends on call rota. 
  • Acute Physicians provide linear consultant presence on AE and assessment areas from 0800 to 20:30
  • In addition, there are gastroenterology and cardiology in-reach teams providing daily review of complex patients. 
  • There is daily support from specialist nurses in several specialties including Oncology, Alcohol, Respiratory, Cardiology, Diabetes and Palliative care. 
  •  Social support is provided by the Access to community service team (ACST). Hospital at home provides opportunities for continuing some treatment including IV treatment after discharge.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the GMC with a valid license to practice
  • FFICM or EDIC & MRCP or equivalent
  • Entry on to the specialist register in ICM & GIM or eligibility within 6 months.
  • Possession of / eligibility for Fellowship / Associate Fellowship of Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Registers.
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of professional societies
  • A higher degree / masters / PhD
  • Formal leadership qualification

Knowledge, Experience & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Practical experience in the management of critical care patients.
  • Previous appointments that provided professional training in Intensive Care Medicine & Acute Medicine.
  • Proven experience of Audit and Quality Improvement with evidence of change.
  • Understanding of the management responsibilities of a Consultant.
  • Ability to work in a team with professional colleagues, both medical and non-medical, and other departments.
  • Demonstrate effective leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the management structure within the NHS.
  • Evidence of commitment to continued professional development.
  • Must show evidence of being proactive and self-motivated.
Desirable criteria
  • Skills in echocardiography and ultrasound. FICE or FAMUS accreditation.
  • Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses.
  • IT and computing skills.
  • Attendance at appropriate leadership courses.
  • Evidence of publications.

Research

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable interest in research.
Desirable criteria
  • Up to date Good Clinical Practice certificate.

Commitment to Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of a commitment to teaching and training of junior medical staff / students and other healthcare professionals.
  • Experience of clinical supervision.
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at courses in teaching, appraisal and mentorship.
  • Completion of a Post-Graduate Certificate in Medical Education.
