We are on the lookout for a dedicated and enthusiastic oculoplastic specialist with the desire to build and lead an exemplary Unit that offers timely proven medical and surgical care to our cohort of patients. WWL NHS FT has recently acquired Teaching hospital status and will fully support the individual in their training and teaching aspirations. Our Trust has in the past year built a close relationship with the Edge Hill University Medical School to offer undergraduate and postgraduate placements to medical students. We welcome any requests for departmental visits and informal discussions in relation to the post.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To provide a Consultant Ophthalmology service for day cases and out-patients, with continuing responsibility for the patients, their care and for the effective functioning of the department
To provide a specialist lacrimal and oculoplastic expertise for the Trust to serve the local population.
To take part in the Consultant on call rota (1:8)
To carry out teaching duties as required and to take an active part in the education programme of junior medical staff, nurses and AHP's.
To provide supervision and training to junior hospital doctors.
To participate in clinical audit, evidence - based practice and clinical governance within the department.
To participate in regional sub-speciality audit and clinical governance to participate actively in continuing professional development (CPD).

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or Basic Medical Degree
- FRCOphth or equivalent
- Full registration with GMC
Desirable criteria
- Specialty specific exams
- MD/MS
Additional
Essential criteria
- Computer literate
- Motivated and ambitious
- Compassionate clinician
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of commitment to team building
- Understanding of Clinical Governance and quality issues
Experience
Essential criteria
- Glaucoma Fellowship or equivalent experience
- Proven Clinical experience in Ophthalmology, with a broad experience of the specialty
- Ability to carry out high volume cataract surgery
- Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively
- Able to plan and develop the service
- Experience of working in and leading a multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives
Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to communicate clearly with clinical colleagues, laboratory staff, and other staff and agencies
- Experience in teaching junior medical staff
- Commitment to continuing professional development
- Computer Literate
Desirable criteria
- Experience in undergraduate teaching
- Formal training in teaching skills
- Subspecialty training in Glaucoma
- Management training
