Clinical Fellow ST3+

NHS Medical & Dental: Local Appointment nodal point 4 (MT04)

AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include.

But they shouldn’t replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.

Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success, because automatically generated answers:

  • might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
  • often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
  • could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience

We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.

Job overview

  • The University Hospitals of Leicester are inviting applications for a Clinical Fellow in General Surgery.

  • The successful candidate will be allocated to a base surgical firm of either upper GI, colorectal, HPB or urology. Rotation between firms will be required as per the discretion of the rota coordinator. Rotation between firms when indicated will provide a diverse experience and breadth of clinical knowledge analogous to core training rotations (CST) or junior registrar rotations (ST3-4).

  • There will be opportunities to gain clinical experience from consultant-led ward rounds, clinics and theatre sessions. Exposure to emergency experience in the form of acute surgical assessment and emergency CEPOD theatres will be available.

  • Oncall shifts at the EMPCC necessitate management of post-operative patients at the highest standard of care. Efficient team working and effective communication with senior surgeons and EMPCC nursing staff will be essential.

  • Participation in the junior doctor teaching programme is expected and opportunity to partake in quality improvement projects will be available e.g. The National Emergency Laparotomy Audit.

Main duties of the job

  • Participate in the running of department/ward
  • Provide surgical clinical supervision of Junior doctors on the wards.
  • Participate in the general surgical oncall triage rota at registrar level (There may be an opportunity to work on the 1st on-call rota, dependent on experience)
  • Provide senior medical input for non surgical wards when oncall (especially Out of Hours).
  • Assist with achieving the DOH Clinical Quality Indicators
  • The ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team is essential to this post. You will participate in operational and research projects and the teaching of the Senior House Officers, Medical Students, Nursing staff and other Ancillary staff.
  • Supervise, monitor and assist Junior Medical Doctors in the day-to-day management of in-patients in posts.
  • Attend and participate in ward rounds as timetabled.
  • Take part in timetabled Emergency work.  This will involve contributing senior input to the on-call team and may include any combination of leading the arrest team, running the surgical admissions unit and triage area as the surgical registrar on call, reviewing medical patients onbase wards and providing a medical opinion for patients in other specialities.
  • Participate in Surgical Outpatient Clinics.
  • Attend weekly educational and multidisciplinary sessions.

Working for our organisation

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
