Job overview

An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Senior Trial Manager to join the Trial & Quality Team based at the Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC) at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

The Senior Trial Manager will join a team of over 140 senior research associates, academics, educationalists, and clinicians, providing a busy and highly motivating place to work. The key focus of this role will be to support the Lead Trial and Quality Manager and Assistant Director of LDC Operations in providing leadership to the trial management team, and operationalise, manage and oversee a portfolio of research studies across the LDC; this will include contract negotiation and financial management. In addition to this, the post holder will be expected to manage a small portfolio of their own studies. The role will include the leadership, development and line management of the trial team; and to ensure studies are set-up in timely fashion and delivered to time, target and within budget. A pivotal aspect of this role will be to set-up trial management processes to ensure trials are set-up and delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with the required regulatory framework.

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

The Leicester Diabetes Centre is led by two world leading diabetologists and is one of the largest facilities in Europe for carrying out international renowned clinical research, teaching and education. It undertakes a wide range of commercial and non-commercial research projects in diabetes and other long-term health conditions and leads/manages/hosts several prestigious research grants and infrastructure awards including a local NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC), and NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) theme in Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity, and NIHR funded Patient Recruitment Centre (PRC) for commercial research.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

It is essential the post holder is qualified to at least first-degree level, has significant trial management experience of managing diabetes single/multi-site studies, including CTIMP trials and has expertise in the field of finance and contract management. A substantial understanding of the research authorisation process, and regulatory frameworks as applied to research, is required as are highly developed presentation and communication skills. It is expected the post will undertake local, national and international travel to attend investigator meetings, carry out audits or attend business meetings. Whilst typical hours are Monday to Friday, a flexible approach to working hours is essential especially in relation to national and international travel.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Hold a relevant degree
  • Previous study or evidence of working towards a relevant Master’s degree
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised teaching or management qualification or working towards

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of running and managing multi and single-site diabetes trials within the NHS and/or HEIs
  • Experience of working within the field of primary care research
  • Experience of line and team management and mentoring
  • Trial management input into funding applications and study protocols
  • Project management skills including the management of trial budgets
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of research financial management within an academic setting
  • Experience of clinical trial costing processes

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Articulate with practised and developed interpersonal communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to influence, command respect and to establish credibility with internal and external stakeholders, commissioners and research funders.
Desirable criteria
  • Presentations to large groups e.g. conference or seminar level

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to interpret and analysis complex trial management information, report findings and generate action plans
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with industry linked clinical trial contracts and agreements

  • Demonstrate the capability to maintain oversight and control of activities whilst supporting a devolved style of management
