SENIOR CLINICAL FELLOW IN GASTROINTESTINAL SURGERY
NHS Medical & Dental: Local Appointment nodal point 4 (MT04)
AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include.
But they shouldn’t replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.
Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success, because automatically generated answers:
- might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
- often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
- could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience
We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.
Job overview

surgery for a one - two year period. The default will be six
months each of although there may well be flexibility to
adjust this according to the applicants need. There may be
opportunities to rotate between firms including
Hepatopancreaticobiliary for instance. In view of the
rotations on offer, a job description of both posts is given
below.
University Hospitals Leicester is the third largest acute trust
in England and consists of three hospitals: Leicester Royal
Infirmary (LRI), Leicester General Hospital (LGH) and
Glenfield Hospital (GH). The Leicester Royal Infirmary is the
largest of the three Hospitals and is based in the city centre.
The LRI is a busy emergency centre with a large Accident
and Emergency unit that sees in excess of 10,000
attendances a year. Approximately 300 emergency
laparotomies are undertaken at the LRI per year with close
consultant supervision.
Main duties of the job
Colorectal surgery:
The colorectal unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary offers the following:
Resectional surgery for colorectal cancer (the two combined colorectal units are the second busiest in the UK) including laparoscopic surgery
Early rectal cancer service
Locally advanced and recurrent colorectal cancer referral centre
Supraregional anal cancer service
Busy proctology service
Inflammatory bowel disease service including ileoanal pouch
Intestinal failure unit with home parenteral nutrition
Functional bowel/pelvic floor unit in collaboration with urogynaecology
Significant emergency surgery exposure
The weekly colorectal and anal cancer MDTs (including surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, pathologists and specialist nurses) allow ample training in the management of colorectal and anal cancer across the whole spectrum of disease. There is a weekly inflammatory bowel disease MDT with Gastroenterology. A weekly radiology meeting supported by specialist GI radiologists provides training in the interpretation of GI imaging.
The colorectal unit is supported by diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. General surgery and specialist clinics (colorectal cancer, anal cancer, functionalbowel) occur regularly.
Working for our organisation
Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).
We have four primary goals:
- high-quality care for all,
- being a great place to work,
- partnerships for impact, and
- research and education excellence
And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.
Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:
- we are compassionate,
- we are proud,
- we are inclusive, and
- we are one team
This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
