Locum Consultant in General Surgery

NHS Medical & Dental: Locum Consultant

AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include.

But they shouldn’t replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.

Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success, because automatically generated answers:

  • might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
  • often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
  • could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience

We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.

Job overview

University Hospitals of Leicester are recruiting a replacement Locum consultant GI surgeon to undertake GI surgical elective day case activity and working as part of the GI surgical SDEC team. This is a 10PA role with no on call or overnight activity.

We have a well-established GI surgical SDEC unit, based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, providing consultant led same day emergency care for over 800 patients each month with two thirds of patients being managed without admission. The SDEC unit is open daily from 8am to 8pm with a full team of resident doctors, advanced clinical practitioners and nursing team. The SDEC consultants are present in the unit Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, to lead the team and provide senior decision making for ambulatory emergency GI surgery patients. The SDEC consultant runs an emergency clinic in the morning in addition to providing a first point of contact for referrals from ED.

The applicant will also undertake elective day case GI surgical activity according to the individual specialist interest, including clinics, theatres and endoscopy. Activity is located within the UHL, UHLiC and EMPCC. The current consultants work closely with the inpatient colorectal and upper GI teams to provide collaborative working and peer support where needed.

There is considerable scope for research and service development for the successful applicant who may wish to join the exiting highly motivated and close working team.

Working for our organisation

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.
