Job overview

Applications are invited for a 12 month, fixed term, Clinical Fellowship post in Laboratory Haematology.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, innovative and forward thinking individual with an interest in laboratory haematology, to join our team. The post is based primarily within the specialist integrated haematological malignancy diagnostic service (HMDL), a regional service supporting hospitals across Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland. The role is an opportunity to build on previous experience and become confident in morphology (blood, bone marrow aspirate and trephine) as well as developing competence in reporting flow cytometry and extending knowledge in molecular aspects of haematological disease. Working in the laboratory the post holder will gain more experience with laboratory quality requirements and accreditation processes. In addition, the post holder would undertake a clinic per week.

Applicants must have at least Part 1 of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists.

As this post is regulated by the Protection of Children Act 1999, The Criminal Justice Courts Act 2000 and / or the Care Standards Act 2000, an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Scheme check will be requested by the Trust in the event of a successful application.

Main duties of the job

Induction: The post will have a formal induction process to familiarise you with the hospital, department and specialty, this will include an introduction to safe laboratory practice.

Clinical and Laboratory: The role will provide experience in laboratory haematology while supporting the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement. The appointee would be predominantly part of the haematology laboratory/HMDL team providing reporting and advice as well as MDT support for the regional non-lymphoma MDT and the regional molecular review meeting. They will contribute to the daily provision of haematology laboratory services, including involvement in quality management and supervision of junior medical staff and Clinical Scientists. There will be opportunities to become proficient in flow reporting. 

The appointee will participate in 1-2 out-patient clinics per week. There is no expected on call commitment associated with this post, although there may be the option to participate if this was the candidates preference.

The appointment will be whole time. If the appointed candidate is unable for personal reasons, to work whole time, they will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with colleagues.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We aim to support, train and inspire the person appointed to gain a breadth of skills and experiences with us to become more confident and proficient in laboratory haematology as well as clinical haematology in the out-patient setting.

MAIN DUTIES

· Reporting blood films and assessing and reporting bone marrow cases (both aspirate and trephine biopsies as well as CSF and other fluid samples), with appropriate support dependent on experience.

· Identifying further investigations required to diagnose haematological malignancies

· Contributing to HMDL integrated reports. This will involve in depth knowledge of morphology, flow cytometry, cytogenetics and molecular studies across the breadth of all haematological malignancies.

· With training and appropriate competency assessment, participate in flow cytometry reporting

· Lead local and regional Haematological Malignancy MDTs

· Participate in the weekly HMDL MDT meeting and the flow cytometry MDT

· Attend and present patient information on the Genomics Tumour Advisory Board (GTAB)

· Provide advice on diagnosis, further investigation and management to assist

clinicians in primary and secondary care

· Contribute to the daily provision of haematology services, including supervision of junior medical staff and Clinical Scientists

· The post holder may wish to gain competence in immunohistochemistry reporting for some HMDL specimens

· Participation in 1-2 out-patient clinics per week

· Participation in quality management in order to provide routine and specialist services to nationally accepted standards (UKAS).

· Evaluate and implement recent developments and guidelines in the specialty to ensure that the department provides an up-to-date service and good practice

· Participate in audit and service development

  • Experience of working within the NHS
  • Previous experience of working in Haematology including laboratory haematology
