Consultant with Special Interest in SARF and ECMO

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include.

But they shouldn’t replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.

Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success, because automatically generated answers:

  • might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
  • often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
  • could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience

We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.

Job overview

Consultant in Adult Cardiothoracic and General Intensive Care Medicine, Specialist Interest in Severe Acute Respiratory Failure (SARF) & ECMO,

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultant to join our expanding Critical Care team at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

We are seeking a dynamic clinician with a strong commitment to Adult Intensive Care Medicine and a particular interest in the management of Severe Acute Respiratory Failure (SARF) and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). The successful candidate will play a key role in the delivery and ongoing development of our specialist general and cardiothoracic critical care, SARF and adult ECMO services.

This is a unique opportunity to join a forward-thinking critical care service with ambitions to further develop and enhance the provision of specialist SARF and adult ECMO care. You will work alongside a highly skilled multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering outstanding patient outcomes while driving innovation in critical care medicine.

Applications are welcomed from suitable candidates on the specialist register for intensive care medicine via the CCT or CESR route or those dual trained with anaesthesia. Candidates may interview for this post within 6 months of expected CCT date. The post is suitable for either single specialty intensivists or those dual trained, please contact to discuss potential job plans.

Main duties of the job

A key aspect of the role is supporting the continued development and expansion of the Trust's nationally recognised SARF and Adult ECMO programmes. The post holder will contribute to specialist clinical decision-making, service improvement initiatives, and the delivery of excellent patient outcomes within a highly specialised critical care environment.

The successful candidate will play an active role in education and training, participating in the department's teaching programmes for transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE), critical care echocardiography, critical care ultrasound, and Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) trainees. Attendance and contribution to multidisciplinary case conferences are expected.

The role also encompasses participation in research, clinical audit, quality improvement activities, and the wider academic mission of the department.

Depending on the appointee's subspecialty expertise and the operational needs of the Trust, additional sessional commitments may include anaesthetic practice, Clinical Decisions Unit sessions, outpatient clinic responsibilities, and critical care transport duties as part of the East Midlands Adult Critical Care Transfer Service (ACCOTS).

Overall, the post offers the opportunity to contribute to one of the UK's leading specialist intensive care, respiratory failure, and ECMO centres, combining advanced clinical practice with teaching, research, service development, and regional leadership in critical care.

Working for our organisation

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
