Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist

NHS AfC: Band 7

AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include.

But they shouldn’t replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.

Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success, because automatically generated answers:

  • might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
  • often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
  • could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience

We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.

Job overview

Clinical Specialist Band 7 Occupational Therapist
Medicine Therapy Team - Preston Lodge.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist to join the therapy team at the newly opened Preston Lodge (UHL) as part of the Phase 2 opening in November 2025.

Preston Lodge will be a 56-bedded reablement focused unit providing the 3R model (rehabilitation, reablement and recovery) for patients who are not yet ready to return home, and have been referred for a D2A pathway from UHL. The aim is to improve patient care and experience, and support faster discharges.

Main duties of the job

·        Be responsible for managing a complex clinical caseload from assessment to discharge/transfer of care within defined protocols, in order to facilitate a timely and safe discharge from Preston Lodge.

·        To provide appropriate education to patients and carers in order to encourage patient participation in the management of their condition either on an individual or group basis

·        To liaise with, and involve patient's carers with patient's treatment as appropriate

·        To make onward referrals and liaise and engage with System Partners to support the appropriate discharge of patients from Preston Lodge.

·        Set outcome related goals with the patient which are consistent with the standards of the department, in order to meet the needs of the patient

·        To use specialist techniques for the handling of patients with physical deficits often within confined spaces.

·        Plan, deliver and progress treatment interventions using clinical reasoning and decision making skills in order to work towards and achieve identified patient goals.

·        To have responsibility for the management of the Preston Lodge OT clinical caseload and ensure patients receive high standards of intervention at all times in accordance with the College of OT Code of Professional Conduct.

·        Apply knowledge of OT process, in order to deliver appropriate treatment interventions and facilitate appropriate clinical decisions.

Working for our organisation

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
