Trust Clinical Fellow ST3+ in Ophthalmology- Cornea
Applications are invited for the above post which offers advanced specialist training in Cornea to be based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. The post is to commence as soon as possible for a fixed-term period of one year. The salary will be on the scale for specialist registrars on an incremental point according to previous experience.
The Corneal service at Leicester Royal Infirmary is led by 2 full time and 2 part time consultants, 2 corneal fellows, and 3 specialist corneal nurses, supported by an active optometry department. Super-specialized clinics including keratoconus diagnosis and monitoring (both virtual and F2F), nurse led dry eye clinics, pressure checking clinics, triage clinics, complex biometry and immune suppression.
The post is suitable for applicants wishing to improve their knowledge and skills in Cornea. Applicants should be at Registrar or equivalent level and nearing the end of training. Applicants need not be in possession of CCT to be eligible, though must have FRCOphth/MRCOphth or equivalent.
Main duties of the job
- To provide Ophthalmology services at the University Hospitals of Leicester. A specialty interest in Cornea is required.
- To provide Ophthalmology services by way of Outpatient clinics and theatre lists at the University Hospitals of Leicester.
- To work flexibly and cooperatively with the other Ophthalmologists to maximise the utilisation of theatre lists and outpatient clinics.
- To ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care as described in the GMC Guidance ‘Duties of a Doctor’ are followed at all times; and that bad practice is reported.
- To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place.
- To actively participate in audits.
- To work with the CBU management team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match - this may require new and flexible ways of working in the future.
- To provide continuing care of patients and be responsible for the proper organisation and functioning of clinical practice.
- To work closely with other specialties, departments and outside agencies to deliver the objectives of the Division and Clinical Business Unit.
- To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trust’s ‘Critical Incident Policy’, are reported in a timely manner.
- To participate in yearly appraisal and job planning process.
- To undertake Mandatory & Statutory training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Ophthalmology Department at University Hospitals of Leicester provides general and specialist ophthalmic services to its 1.3 million adult and children patients registered with a general practice located within Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR). It also services as a tertiary centre for some referrals from beyond the borders of LLR.
Overall, the ophthalmology department delivers over 100,000 clinical appointments to patients as well as providing surgery, injections, and an Eye Casualty service attending to 25,000 patients annually. We are a large department with 28 consultant ophthalmologists and our teams of doctors, nurses, optometrists, orthoptists, ophthalmic practitioners, photographers, clerical, and management staff.
The Ophthalmology Department has pioneered innovative new ways of working to meet the high service demand. These include services such as virtual clinics in many popular areas, such as medical retina and glaucoma, and allied healthcare professional running clinics and telephone or video consultations.

Essential criteria
- MBBS or equiv.
- Full Registration with the GMC with a licence to practice
Desirable criteria
- Within 6 months of registering for CCT from PMETB at the closing date.
Experience

- Cornea experience and skills Similar to a trainee within 6 months of CCT
Desirable criteria
- Wider experience of Cornea ophthalmology than expected of a trainee within 6 months of CCT.
