Job overview

 If you are a band 6 Midwife and have  a passion for infant feeding and want to be part of the Infant feeding team across University Hospitals of  Leicester NHS Trust  then please apply.  

You will provide support to develop and implement infant feeding policies and practice within the Trust, in-line with UNICEF BFI. You will also help to meet national and local breastfeeding targets and help to address health inequalities.

You will  have experience in breastfeeding practice and management. You will work as part of team dedicated to improving breastfeeding initiation and continuation rates, supporting Trust staff to develop their knowledge and ensuring that babies receive continuous effective feeding support in both the Acute and community settings.

 You will be trained in completing audits and support the Baby Friendly accreditation preparation and maintenance of accreditation. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assist the Lead Infant feeding Midwife to devise, develop, deliver and review strategies to ensure health professionals are adequately trained in breastfeeding and formula feeding management, as well as:

  • act as a clinical expert and professional resource to service users, their families and the multi-professional team.
  • provide evidence based breastfeeding education and knowledge to the users of the Maternity service
  • understand the safe use of formula and provide information in line with UNICEF BFI and the WHO Code for the Marketing of Breast milk substitutes and to be personally compliant with the CODE
  • promote appropriate infant feeding within all areas of the Trust
  • champion the Joint Infant feeding policy and relevant Guidelines relating to Infant feeding within the Trust.
  • innovate and implement new initiatives relevant to infant feeding
  • assess and audit efficacy of service provision and quality standard, including undertaking BFI audit of service users and staff and monitoring re-admissions of babies under 28 days for feeding related issues
  • help with the collection of relevant statistical information.
  • develop links with the network of support available for women once transferred into the community
  • facilitate and undertake a specialised infant feeding service/clinics for women who are experiencing difficulties or who have particular challenges establishing breastfeeding

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a specialist post that requires additional knowledge about Breastfeeding and supporting safe formula feeding. 

  • Protect Support and Promote Breastfeeding to UNICEF BFI standards.
  • You will provide expert clinical care and offer infant feeding support in complex situations with families and colleagues.
  •  Providing support to regularly Audit staff and mothers and ensuring we meet the recommendations to maintain our BFI accreditation.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to inspire, support and motivate staff.
  • Providing training and education, and you will be supported to develop excellent teaching skills and a high standard of organisation and time management.
