Job Summary
The post holder is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of peri‑operative care programmes, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred care. The role requires flexibility across all theatre areas and active participation in multidisciplinary working.
Clinically, the post holder may be required to work as a:
- Scrubbed surgical assistant
- Circulating assistant
- Anaesthetic assistant
- Recovery room practitioner
The post holder may also take responsibility for the coordination and supervision of a theatre team for a defined period, operating list or shift. Staff employed primarily as anaesthetic assistants will normally work within that role. Multi‑skilling is actively encouraged, and appropriate support will be provided to those wishing to extend their clinical skills.

Main duties of the job
The ability and expertise to scrub for Orthopaedics, Urology and Ophthalmology
Deliver high standards of peri‑operative care through safe, evidence‑based practice.
Actively participate in patient‑focused care throughout the peri‑operative pathway.
Maintain accurate, timely and legible records of patient care.
Ensure the correct labelling, handling and dispatch of pathology specimens in accordance with local and Trust policies.
Demonstrate specialist knowledge within a defined clinical area and apply this appropriately to practice.
Maintain competence and continuously update knowledge in line with current developments in operating theatre practice.
Liaise effectively with medical staff, theatre teams and other hospital departments to support efficient service delivery.
Communicate clearly and professionally with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
Support effective teamwork and positive working relationships across all disciplines.
Participate in departmental meetings and contribute constructively to service developments.
Ensure all health and safety procedures are adhered to in line with Trust and departmental policies.
Actively participate in safety checks including swab, needle and instrument counts.
Ensure the safe storage, control and administration of drugs in accordance with Trust policy.
Report all incidents, accidents, near misses and complaints promptly to the Theatre Manager or designated deputy.
