Job overview

Ophthalmology Department 

The Ophthalmology Department (part of the Head and Neck Care Group) at NHS HHP are primarily  

located at all the main hospital sites in the group (Hull Royal Infirmary, Castle Hill Hospital, Diana Princess  

of Wales Hospital at Grimsby, Scunthorpe General Hospital, and Goole & District Hospital) where the  

consultants are also based The Ophthalmology Departments serve a population of nearly 600,000. Daily activity consists of out-patient clinics, surgery and 24 hours on call cover.  

 

There will be an increase in imaging capacity when the Ophthalmic Imaging Hubs open at East Riding 

Community Hospital, and Scunthorpe later this year.  

 

Currently there are 32 consultant ophthalmologists (FT & LTFT) at NHS HHP. Plans are in motion for 

additional recruitment to expand the team in the next 1-2 years.

Appropriate secretarial support will be provided along with appropriate office accommodation and IT facilities. 

 

 

Main duties of the job

The Role 

Provision of Ophthalmic Services within the Trust with responsibility for the prevention, assessment, diagnosis and treatment of illness within the Ophthalmology department. 

 

Close working with medical, nursing and allied health professionals to assist in providing high quality patient care. 

 

The post holder will be accountable to clinical supervisors and Mr Satish Kotta as clinical lead for the department.   

  

Administration Duties: These include responsibility for inpatient discharge summaries, outpatient letters etc and the management of other junior staff on the team. Duties other than those clinical duties specified will be in accordance with the Job Plan agreed between the Appointee, the present Consultants and the Chief Executive.   

 

The Job Plan allows time for Administration, Teaching and Medical Audit. Participation in audit/appraisal and CME is mandatory under clinical governance/GMC guidance. Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby will be the base hospital for this post, however all clinicians may be required to work on any of the Humberwide partnership Trust’s sites and across the seven day period where necessary. Secretarial support and appropriate office accommodation and IT facilities will be provided.

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full Registration with the GMC

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, DRCOphth or FRCS Ophthalmology (Glasgow)

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of ST1 competencies or equivalent in Ophthalmology. Ability to manage general, emergency, ophthalmic and paediatric problems. Ability to record detailed legible medical notes Demonstrate evidence based practice OCT analysis skills
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Ophthalmic Surgery

Management and Administration Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to manage and lead medical/surgical teams Ability to lead on smooth and efficient running of the unit Ability to organise, prioritise and manage high intensity workload
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/ delivery

Teaching, Audit and Research

Essential criteria
