Multi Professional Approved Clinician

The post holder will be based at the Peter Hodgkinson Centre, Lincoln County Hospital. The post holder will carry a distinct clinical caseload as Approved Clinician / Responsible Clinician on Castle Ward, a female acute inpatient unit. They will also provide two sessions to our Psychiatric Clinical Decisions Unit (PCDU) and Mental Health Urgent Assessment Centre (MHUAC) and offer highly specialised clinical care specifically within the inpatient and urgent care pathway, using advanced clinical knowledge that is evidenced based and within their specific professional skill set.
The post holder will work alongside a Consultant Psychiatrist to support and oversee the planning and delivery of care to people with complex emotional, psychological, social, physical and mental health needs and providing clinical and professional support as required.

The post holder, as an Approved Clinician, will be the clinical lead for all allocated patients admitted to the wards, taking the lead role in all aspects of their care for the duration of their admission, providing senior clinical oversight of service users with the most complex mental health needs. To act as an Approved Clinician for patients, taking overall clinical and legal responsibility for patients detained under the MHA and demonstrate associated expertise in the assessment, treatment and management of personality disordered patients. This will include clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary team and joint work with colleagues from other disciplines in the provision of high-quality clinical care. To work alongside an in-patient Consultant Psychiatrist, acting as a resource and taking responsibility for the provision of expert advice and guidance in relation to Approved Clinician under the Mental Health Act. The postholder will join a multi-professional team of medical staff, nursing staff of all grades, social therapists, psychologists, occupational therapists, and social workers, who work closely with the unit leadership to deliver a safe and highly effective service. Approved Clinician supervision will be provided by the Lead Consultant Psychiatrist. Professional supervision will be provided according to professional registration requirements. Line Management will be provided by the Consultant responsible for the service.

The postholder will demonstrate the core competencies of an Approved Clinician (AC). Provide assessment of needs, formulation, and intervention plans, including direct intervention or support work and outcome evaluation.
Compile and complete statutory documentation, as an Approved Clinician / Responsible Clinician. This includes writing Hospital Managers /Mental Health Tribunal /Ministry of Justice reports. Present evidence to Courts, Tribunals and Hospital Managers Hearings. Assess and monitor risk and draw up appropriate risk management plans. Review and monitor clinical decisions made concerning restrictive practices, for example, seclusion or long-term segregation of detained inpatients, reconciling inter- and intra-professional differences of opinion, judgements on complex clinical issues. Ensure that all services provided are acceptable and accessible to the diverse communities which make up the clients of this service. Use expert knowledge to inform and develop treatment protocols which are rigorous, comprehensive and sensitive to mental disorder, personality
disorder, neurodiversity, gender, culture, and service provision.

- Trained and registered as an Approved Clinician
- Registered Mental Health Nurse with current professional registration with the NMC / Clinical Psychologist / Registered Social Worker/ LD Nurse or Occupational Therapist
- Relevant Post-graduate clinical qualification(s) with a professional portfolio supporting this.
- Master’s Degree (or equivalent)
Experience

- Significant and demonstrable post qualifying experience in relevant area of practice
- Demonstrable experience of Autonomous clinical decision making
- Experience of managing change e.g. implementing new models of care, new pathways, service development activities
- Previous experience in a clinical / operational leadership role at a senior level
- Proven experience of strategic leadership and service development.
- Leading formulation, review, and treatment within the context of the multidisciplinary team
- Must have substantial experience of: Liaison and joint working with statutory, voluntary and private sector agencies including practical application of Care Programme Approach
- Ability to convey highly sensitive and at times distressing news to patients, staff or others. Able to manage situations that may be highly charged or confrontational.
- Confidence and competence in using IT systems (e.g. Outlook, Word, clinical or other record systems) relevant to the role.
- Project management of quality and service improvement initiatives
- Working with patients by the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, MHA Code of Practice Developing and delivering training programs and clinical supervision
