Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Eating Disorders

The team provides a county-wide service for both men and women and young people (who elect to be seen in Adult Services) over the age of 16, who need help, support and treatment for an eating disorder such as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge-eating disorder and A-typical eating disorders.

The service offers assessment and treatment in a variety of community bases across Lincolnshire. Appointments take place in the community close to the person’s home. Inpatient treatment is an option at The Bennion Centre, Glenfield Hospital, Groby Road, Leicester. The service operates Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.

The team receives an excess of 200 new referrals a year. Assessment can take 1-2 sessions. The service is required by commissioners to assess within 4 weeks of referral and to start treatment within 4 weeks of assessment.

The full-time members of the team have 13  regular ongoing therapy contacts per week. These appointments last about an hour. There will also be 1-2 new patient assessments.

The Consultant will have on average 10 contacts per week, some are ongoing therapy patients, and some are reviews for other members of the team as well as be part of the team that offer consultations, supervision and training to the wider health system. There are also usually 1-2 new assessments a week on average.

There is a requirement to participate in an oncall rota

The role consists of a combination of clinical,  leadership and educational duties.  The job plan provides for 7.5 direct clinical care and 2.5 supporting professional activity programme activities, with additional PA's for a limited period as part of a recruitment and retention premium.

Working within a multi-disciplinary team, the postholder will provide psychiatric assessments, medical assessments, risk assessments, liaising with other services and provide therapeutic input through a variety of modalities.  Helping to develop the service and associated policies, following national guidance.

 The postholder will lead and supervise more junior members of the team, role model good practice and lead on clinical governance and audit within the team.

 The success candidate will teach and train staff from the ED service team and wider Trust. Support wider networks such as parents, carers, social workers, schools and colleges to reduce stigma and promote awareness of ED for better prognosis.

There are currently no formal management responsibilities.

The postholder is required to be a clinical supervisor to training/non-training grade doctors joining the team.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice
  • Included on the GMC Specialist register, or within 6 months of completing
  • Approved Clinician status, or able to achieve within 3 months of completing
  • Approved under Section 12(2) or able to achieve within 3 months of completing
  • MRCPsych or MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • DBS clearance

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • Willingness to engage with further training
  • Additional clinical qualifications
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice

Knowledge

  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Clinical training and experience required for gaining UK CCT, or other alternative routes, such as CESR Fellowship
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Widespread and detailed experience of assessment and management of patients relating to eating disorders.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
