Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust is responsible for providing mental health services for people of all ages across the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, as well as providing some specialist services across the whole of North London and beyond. Since January 2011, the Trust also provides adult and children’s community health services in Enfield, following the transfer of Enfield Community Services from NHS Enfield.

Job overview

The post offered is that of a full-time Specialty Doctor in Older Adult Psychiatry, working within the Barnet Memory Service. This is a new and additional post within Older Adult Community Services division. It is a great opportunity to gain a great deal of experience and knowledge working in Older Adult Psychiatry. It has arisen due to additional funding to support and enhance service delivery by Barnet Memory Service due to increased referral rates due to aging population within the borough. The service provides assessments to individuals with cognitive and functioning decline in outpatient setting based at Barnet General Hospital.

The post is full-time for 10 Programmed Activities (PA): 9 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1 Supported Professional Actitivies (SPA). The post holder will be supported by two Consultant Psychiatrists working within the Memory Clinic, as well as a team and service manager.

Main duties of the job

To Provide memory assessments and treatment plans for patients under the memory service

To Provide leadership and clinical advice to colleagues within the memory service

To Provide treatment based on knowledge of the evidence for pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, in accordance with NICE and relevant guidelines

To Ensure effective and timely documentation on electronic patient notes (RiO)

To Provide support in formulating treatment plans in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team

To Ensure the review and care of patients’ physical health through liaison with other agencies including the patients GP and general hospital services.

To Promote mental health and independence for all people

To Provide clinical and professional leadership in the service

To Provide support to carers and relatives of people, including them wherever possible and in care plans

To Facilitate access to a range of community orientated services to those who may need them

To Liaise effectively with other Trust services and external partner agencies in the best interests of patients

To Comply with all legal obligations covering clinical practice e.g. MHA (1983) and MCA (2005)

To Commit to ensuring fair access to services for all.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Barnet Memory Service provides assessment and treatment to residents of Barnet and

patients registered with Barnet GPs with suspected dementias usually associated with ageing.The aim of the service is to provide good quality, early diagnosis, and intervention for patients with dementia. Outpatient clinics takes place Monday to Friday at the Springwell Centre at Barnet General Hospital. Initial assessments are completed by doctors within the service, while follow-up appointments are usually allocated to nursing colleagues.

Qualifications and Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent qualification
  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a current licence to practise from the GMC at intended start date. Section 12 Approved or eligibility for it.
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPsych (or equivalent) Section 12 MHA Approved Additional degree or equivalent

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of achievement of CT1 1-3 or equivalent competencies in psychiatry at time of application
  • Training and clinical expertise in assessment, diagnosis and management of older adults with cognitive impairment
  • Experience with older adult psychiatry and with working in a multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in general medicine
  • Experience in teaching with ability to use a wide range of teaching techniques and audio-visual aids
  • Evidence of audit/QI experience

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent clinical skills Excellent communication skills both verbally and written Familiarity with a wide range of theoretical and clinical approaches. Ability to provide medical leadership to the multi-disciplinary team and to function as an active member of the multi-disciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Clear thoughts on how to involve service users in service development and to provide a service which is experienced as being “service-user friendly” Practical experience in a short term psychological therapy

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good knowledge of the biological, psychological and social determinants of adult mental disorders and evidence based management interventions
  • Up to date knowledge of recent Dept of Health documents and NICE Guidelines. Negotiation skills
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of change management skills Experience in developing a service component
