Band 8b First Contact Practitioner (FCP) Lead
Barnet Hospital | Full-time / Part-time considered

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and experienced clinician to lead our First Contact Practitioner (FCP) service across Barnet and Enfield. This is a new 8b leadership role with responsibility for shaping and developing a high-performing, integrated FCP team.

Our established model is fully integrated across primary and secondary care, with all FCPs maintaining clinical roles within secondary care services. This supports strong, collaborative relationships with orthopaedic consultants and ensures high-quality, seamless patient care across pathways.

The postholder will work closely alongside our Advanced Practice Lead, providing system leadership and supporting service development across the pathway.

We are seeking a motivated leader with advanced clinical expertise, strong system leadership skills, and a passion for service development and workforce innovation.

  • • BSc Degree in Physiotherapy or Diploma or equivalent
  • • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration
  • • Postgraduate training or development in clinical skills up to MSc level or equivalent with a focus in pain or musculoskeletal physiotherapy
  • • Evidence or portfolio of post-graduate continued development
  • • Postgraduate training or development in management and leadership skills
Desirable criteria
  • • Membership of specialist interest group
  • • Independent prescriber qualification
  • • Musculoskeletal injection therapy qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Substantial postgraduate experience in musculoskeletal field including pain management and working at Advanced Practice Level including First Contact Practice
  • • Advanced knowledge and experience of a wide range of approaches to the management of patients with a wide variety of conditions including complex chronic pain conditions
  • • Experience of cognitive behavioural approaches to pain
  • • Experience of delivering group work
  • • Experience in managing highly distressed patients in group and individual settings
  • • Experience of supervising senior qualified staff
  • • Experience of leading a service/ team
  • • Active involvement in clinical audit, research and policy/ guideline implementation
  • • Experience of teaching to uni-disciplinary/ multidisciplinary groups
  • • Evidence of service development & contribution to change within the workplace
  • • Experience of working alone, managing own time and using excellent organisational skills

Skills and aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • • Highly specialist knowledge within the pain and musculoskeletal field and ability to apply this in a clinical setting
  • • Knowledge of recent developments in the profession
  • • To be competent in the decision making process and ordering of any investigations necessary in order to reach a diagnosis or decide on the appropriate management of the patient’s condition e.g. x-rays, MRI, blood tests, EMGs, ultrasound, listing for surgery in line with protocols and guidelines. This will require highly advanced clinical reasoning and highly developed problem solving and analytical skills and is beyond the normal scope of physiotherapy practice.
  • • Skills in critical analysis and the application of research to practice
  • • Ability to support and facilitate change
  • • Excellent communication / interpersonal skills both written and verbal
  • • To manage stressful situations by remaining calm, objective and professional at all times
  • • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills
