Main duties of the job

The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a fulltime band 8a clinical specialist sonographer.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced sonographer to join our friendly and diverse team. 

As a sonographer at the trust, you will be involved with the delivery of Ultrasound services covering the main ultrasound departments, Antenatal Clinic, Fetal Medicine Unit, Acute Gynae and Early Pregnancy Unit.  

You must be clinically highly competent and keen to contribute towards efficient service delivery.  A Post Graduate Certificate/Diploma in ultrasound (PgDip) or DMU qualification is essential for this role.

If you are an ambitious Sonographer, seeking a flexible role, then we would love to hear from you.

Your Independent practice would include scanning and reporting of your own sessions. Also teaching of students, organising junior staff, professional development, audit and collaborative projects are required.

Support for consultant sonographers and managers are part of this advanced Band 8a role.

Some Cross site rotation through Barnet, Chase Farm, Edgware, Finchley and Hadley Wood hospitals may be required depending on service needs.

  • DCR or BSc diploma/degree or equivalent
  • PGDip in medical ultrasound / DMU equivalent
  • Evidence of CPD
  • HCPC or relevant professional registration

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of working at a band 8a level
  • Experience of working with clinical leads in specialist areas to develop services
  • Experience of working with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience across majority of main areas of US including obstetrics/gynaecology, abdominal, small parts, MSK, breast

Skills and aptitudes

  • Demonstrates the ability to lead and work as part of a team
  • Ability to teach and mentor students
  • Track record of audit and presentation of audit findings within a team
  • Patient and safety focused
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team, including Consultants, Sonographers, Midwives, GP’s , Nurses and other Health care workers when discussing patient management
  • Possess a full understanding of ethical and moral issues to enable delivery of highly sensitive and at times distressing information to the patients in appropriate /empathetic manner
  • An understanding of local and national guidance relevant to medical ultrasound
  • Ability to cope with work pressures and manage time effectively
  • Ability to make prompt decisions based on knowledge, experience and circumstances
  • Ability to work autonomously and within a team
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Skills of working and reporting on PACS/RIS and Viewpoint systems
  • Keep all records up to date in a clear, accurate and concise manner on a day-to-day basis

  • An understanding of the National and local policies and guidelines in relation to medical ultrasound
