This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy and dynamic multidisciplinary inpatient service at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, where the successful candidate will work closely with the Administrator, Ward Manager and Nursing team in providing top-tier housekeeping support for the National Psychosis Unit.    

 

 

Main duties of the job

The postholder will work as an integral part of the ward team and be responsible for the coordination of all client facilities services in the ward area ensuring a clean, safe and comfortable environment. 

The main elements of the role are ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of cleaning, catering, maintenance and laundry, together with other specified tasks to meet individual client needs as determined by the ward manager and shift coordinator to ensure the seamless delivery of high-quality inpatient care and service management. Creative and dynamic ways of working are desirable as we are always looking to evolve the service and improve the service we provide.  

Strong organisational skills and diligent oversight of the ward environment are required as the postholder will be required to work closely with contractors and support service departments   to monitor quality standards, report deficiencies and ensure requested work is completed. 

The postholder will be based on the ward and within the nursing offices and will work closely with the nursing team and patient group, therefore strong interpersonal and communication are essential to work effectively and sensitively with a diverse range of patients and professionals.

About the National Psychosis Unit: The National Psychosis Service (NPS) is a clinical-academic tertiary service offering innovative individualised evidence-based multidisciplinary strategies to help those people with complex psychosis. The service aims to enhance quality of life through tailored treatments, collaborative working across the MDT with a focus on the promotion of individualised recovery, aimed at reducing the need for high intensity placements and the risk of readmission. Internationally renowned expertise in resistant psychosis is provided by a team of dedicated clinicians offering comprehensive medical reviews alongside innovative, bespoke treatment approaches.  We regularly audit and publish our service outcomes and receive excellent feedback from our patients and their families.  As our patients may be a long way from home, we aim to make admissions as short as possible and communicate regularly with carers, patient’s local health and social care teams and commissions to plan care and facilitate timely discharge.   

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 

Cleaning 

To carry out Quality Audits in all areas of the ward reporting directly back to the domestic supervisor and ward manager. 

To ensure spillages are dealt with swiftly and efficiently. 

To ensure the ward is always safe and tidy e.g. remove clutter, tidy notice boards and remove any old information.

Liaise with the domestic department for arranging deep cleaning of surfaces and furnishings, informing them when bedrooms need to be cleaned following discharges. 

Catering 

To ensure the daily menu is displayed correctly.    

Assist clients in ordering food and where necessary taking into account special needs and dietary requirements; informing catering suppliers of special dietary needs for individual clients and requesting extra meal requirements that may arise.   

To update catering with requirements for special diets. To co-ordinate extra meal requirements that may arise. 

Ensure the dining area is a pleasant environment and tables are laid with condiment pots, cutlery and crockery where appropriate. 

To ensure the ward kitchen is always kept clean and tidy and report any issues with equipment/cleanliness.    

Order hardware, crockery and cutlery and monitor the use of these. 

Laundry  

Oversea the ward linen’s supply, including weekly ordering.    

Contact laundry when supplies are running low.  

Keep linen and laundry room tidy. Assist clients in obtaining clean laundry when required. 

Maintaining the Environment 

To manage the words, work requisition log ensuring all defects are logged, reported, recorded and  closed as appropriate. 

To co-ordinate other ad-hoc maintenance, liaising with Facilities department e.g. curtain hanging/cleaning, wall washing, pest control. 

To respect the privacy and dignity of clients whilst carrying out housekeeping duties. 

Organise the storage of clients’ property including contacting clients about property left on the ward. 

Be responsible for keeping the sluice room and storage areas tidy. 

Health and Safety 

To support the Ward manager in maintaining Health and Safety requirements on the ward in accordance with the Trust Health & Safety Policy and to follow up as required.  

Record all Health & Safety audits on Assessnet. 

To carry out spot checks of the environment.  

Administrative Duties   

To support with the organisation of patient records and ward information in accordance with the Data Protection Act, including scanning and uploading patient records to clinical systems and electronic patient recording systems.    

To ensure ward notice and display boards are kept up to date and well presented.      

To support with answer phones in the nursing office, responding to telephone queries and liaising with relevant members of the team.    

Ensure the ward diary is kept accessible and up to date, bring appointment letters to attention of nursing staff    

Monitor stock levels of clinical and stationery supplies for the unit and order these via e-procurement and put them away when delivered   

Take notes at monthly patient community meetings  

General 

To receive welcome and guide visitors on the ward, liaising with other staff as appropriate. To respond to request for general information. 

To receive and pass on information to others, maintaining confidentiality.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Relevant skills acquired through appropriate training or experience.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Administrative/office experience acquired in NHS or other office environment.
  • Experience of using MS Teams, Word, Excel.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a mental health service and/or vulnerable adults
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of food and hygiene standards and Health & Safety legislation.
  • Willingness to learn how to use new databases, patient information systems etc.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly and effectively as part of a team and prioritise work.
  • Ability to learn and use systems for recording Health & Safety audits on Assessnet, ordering catering/ward supplies on ISS, e-procurement and Planet FM systems, and maintaining up to date systems relating to maintenance, catering, cleaning etc.
  • Ability to perform physical activity required of the role.
