Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a pharmacy technician to join our dynamic, innovative and friendly team pharmacy purchasing team. We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and efficient pharmacy technician with experience and a passion in this area of work within hospital pharmacy. 

Excellent communication skills and enjoying working as part of a large multi-disciplinary team are essential. You will also need to be friendly, approachable, adaptable, flexible, willing to learn new skills and be committed to continuous professional development.

All applicants must be registered pharmacy technicians with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

This is a full time permanent post, and the post holder will be required to participate in the weekend and late night rota.

Main duties of the job

§  Assists in the planning and development of the pharmacy purchasing service for the Trust.

§  Deputise for the Principal Pharmacy Technician – Purchasing.

§  Sources and orders medicines in line with national contracts and frameworks

§  Responsible for managing the purchasing aspects of Medicines Shortages including identifying shortage, having up to date knowledge of current position of supply chain and sourcing alternatives including the most appropriate unlicensed medicines.

§  Responsible for communicating and working with pharmacists to manage ‘Medicines Shortages’.

§  Responsible for reviewing and writing policies and Standard Operating Procedures relating to ‘Medicines Shortages’.

§  Responsible for the efficient and effective management of Pharmacy Procurement at Northwick Park Hospital.

§  Maintain and assist in the development of the Quality Management System for Good Distribution Practice.

§  Review, write and implement Standard Operating Procedures in Pharmacy Procurement.

§  Develops and implements the pharmacy department’s e-commerce strategy.

§  Assist in updating and maintenance of the pharmacy computer system to ensure its effectiveness and efficiency.

§  Assist in the training of new staff on the pharmacy computer system ordering and stock control system.

§  Manages pharmacy staff including rotational pharmacy technicians, pharmacy storekeeper and ATOs.

Education/ qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ in Pharmaceutical Services or Equivalent
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with GPhC
Desirable criteria
  • Attained full CIPs qualification

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience as Pharmacy Technician in various departments within hospital pharmacy
  • Sound experience working in purchasing in hospital pharmacy in permanent position
  • Management experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with Pharmaceutical Quality Management System
  • Experience and knowledge of NHS contracting systems
