Job overview
This is an exciting time to be working at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation one of the biggest NHS Trusts in the UK, delivering care to more than 1.6 million people a year through our three main hospitals.
We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced Occupational Therapist with neurological assessment and treatment skills to join our B6 Occupational Therapy Neurosciences rotation. Our rotations happen on a 9 monthly basis. You will be expected to deliver a patient focused, evidence based, high quality therapy. These rotations include, Community and in-patient bed rehab based at the Edgware Community Hospital (NRC), as well as acute stroke, neuro REACT and ICU.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to:
· Provide specialised Occupational Therapy (OT) service to patients treated across three sites. This requires working under guidance and incorporating evidence-based practice (EBP) in the management of patient care.
· Complete advanced functional assessments and treatment with patients, preparing them for safe discharge to home or the community. The caseload consists of patients with physical and cognitive impairment, and encompasses various specialist clinical areas of Occupational Therapy.
· Clinically supervise and guide the professional work of less experienced therapy staff, students and Therapy Assistants as appropriate, while complying with professional and departmental standards of practice.
· Undertake all necessary verbal and written communication required for patient care.
· Demonstrate the ability to perform manual handling tasks such as the hoisting and/or transfer of patients, fitting and delivery of ADL equipment, specialist splinting and basic IT skills.
· Assist in operational issues related to their area of work

You will be joining an innovative and dedicated team and be responsible for the provision of specialist neurological occupational therapy to individuals with a range of neurological conditions who present with complex needs. The successful candidate is required to be able to demonstrate the Trust values, the responsibilities of the job description and person specification. In particular you should have proven experience of working in an acute hospital setting and with patients with Neurological conditions.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· Carry out complex standardised and non-standardised OT assessments of functional ability, cognition, home situation and psychosocial issues, liaising with senior OT staff as required for highly complex patients.
· Provides advanced recommendations/advice regarding OT management of each patient according to the individual needs of the patient.
· Monitors, reviews and modifies treatment plans/goals to measure progress and ensure effective outcomes e.g. planning patient discharges/ referral to specialist rehabilitation settings
· Prioritises own patient caseload and develops individualised treatment interventions within resource constraints under supervision from senior therapists
- Promotes the role of occupational therapy at a variety of meetings, ward rounds and seminars, in particular promoting close liaison with other health professionals, private and voluntary organisations.
- Responsible for the management, transport and fitting of specialised equipment in patient’s community setting as required, e.g. toileting and bathing equipment, potentially in restricted spaces.
- Discusses and makes recommendations to the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) with regard to complex patient management.
- Carries a full patient caseload varied in number dependent upon the complexity of the patients and adhering to prioritisation policies.
- Assists in ensuring less experienced staff apply relevant aspects of national clinical guidelines and legislation, which relate to health and social care.
- Plans and allocates work to therapy assistant staff.

education and qualifications
Essential criteria
- Diploma/degree in occupational therapy
- Evidence of ongoing CPD
- HCPC registered and member of RCOT
Desirable criteria
- Attendance at relevant post-Graduate Courses
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Ability to prioritise, organise and work in a busy environment.
- Able to demonstrate a high level of clinical reasoning
- Good communication skills, able to present information (written and oral) in a clear and logical manner.
Desirable criteria
- Able to deal with difficult situations, eg dealing with challenging situations
- Good presentation skills.
Clinical Experience and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 18 months post graduate experience.
- Broad post graduate experience with significant component in relevant area
- Experience of working as part of a team
- Supervision of students or occupational therapy assistants.
- Awareness of own knowledge and development needs.
- Knowledge and understanding of evidence based stroke care and neuro rehab frameworks
- Have a comprehensive understanding of clinical governance in relation to occupational therapy and ability to apply principles to own area.
