Job overview
St Helier’s Neonatal Services comprise 2 Intensive Care Unit (ITU) cots, 4 High Dependency Unit (HDU) cots, 8 Special Care (SC) cots, and 8 Transitional Care (TC) cots. In addition, Epsom Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) provides 6 Special Care cots. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to the principles of Family Integrated Care and actively support the unit’s progression towards Baby Friendly Initiative and BLISS accreditation.

Main duties of the job

Provide expert clinical leadership and supervision to the neonatal nursing team, ensuring the delivery of consistently high standards of care.

Oversee the full cycle of neonatal care, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, to guarantee safe, effective, and evidence-based treatment.

Mentor and support nursing staff through structured education, training, and performance reviews, fostering a culture of professional development and continuous improvement.

Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including medical staff, allied health professionals, and families, to coordinate holistic and patient-centered care.

Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical protocols and policies, ensuring alignment with local and national standards and best practices.

Provide compassionate emotional support and clear education to families, helping them understand their infant’s condition, treatment plan, and ongoing care needs.

Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation, ensuring compliance with regulatory and governance requirements.

Respond promptly and effectively to emergency situations, demonstrating advanced expertise in neonatal resuscitation and critical care management.

Essential criteria
- • First level registration with NMC • Relevant health related degree • QIS • Current NLS • Mentorship/Assessors course
Desirable criteria
- • Leadership course • Masters level qualification
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- •• Recent experience in a level 2/3 neonatal unit • Good understanding of current issues in neonates; Transitional care, family integrated care and BFI. • Facilitating and teaching pre-reg and CPD students • Evidence of professional development
Desirable criteria
- • Management of sickness/ HR related issues • Leading role in specialist interest group • Experience in conducting IPR
Skills
Essential criteria
- • Competent in caring for ITU/HDU/SCBU/TC babies • Computer literate • Leadership Skills • Teamwork • Safeguarding and child protection • Good verbal and written skills • Analytical skills • Ability to work under pressure • Able to work within a multi-racial & cultural environment
Desirable criteria
- • Datix and risk management experience • Clinical auditing experience.
