Job overview

The Urology Team at The Royal Marsden Hospital have an international reputation for high quality patient care, education and research and its partnership with the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) has created the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe.

The gateway to treatment at RMH is through the innovative and award-winning nurse-led urology diagnostic service which is the first nurse-led urology diagnostic service is Europe. This has now been successfully running for 7 years. An opportunity has arisen for a Urology Diagnostic Nurse Specialist to join this established team.


The successful applicant will work with the Diagnostic Team to support patients through this expidited pathway. You should have experience in the field of Urology and advanced practice skills including phlebotomy, cannulation, biopsy and flexible cystsocopy assistance and catheterisation. 


You should have excellent interpersonal skills and a professional manner, be able to prioritise and organize your workload and work under pressure. You will be expected to work across all RMH sites.

Main duties of the job

The CNS will place quality at the heart of practice by working with the Nurse-led Diagnostic Team in delivering evidence based individualised care, through holistic needs assessment, planning and evaluation of care.

 

1.1     To assist in the provision of professional and clinical leadership and expertise in the care of the patient under your care, acting as a resource and consultant to provide information and support to patients, carers and staff.

1.2    To liaise effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary health care team so as to achieve a synchronised specialist service.

 

1.3    To develop or contribute to the formulation of patient information.

 

1.4    To develop or contribute to the formulation of policies.

 

1.5    To provide informal and formal teaching, for patients, staff and carers as relevant e.g. academic courses provided by The School, internal within the team.

Clinical Responsibility – Patient Care.
These responsibilities will be carried out under the guidance of the senior urology diagnostic CNS, ANPs and nurse consultant:

1.        To use effective communication skills in all aspects of patient assessment, care and support, recognising and responding appropriately to the individual physiological, psychological, social, cultural and informational needs of patients with cancer and their families.
2.        To act as a key worker for a clinical caseload incorporating the responsibilities of the key worker role, working to coordinate care and provide easy and timely access for ongoing support for patients under the guidance of the CNS/ANP.
3.        To act as patient advocate when appropriate and respect patient confidentiality and privacy with respect for diverse cultural backgrounds and requirements. 
4.        To learn to undertake in-depth discussions about the patients’ particular diagnosis, all treatment options, including research based treatments with sensitivity, knowledge and expertise to enable patients to make an informed choice.
5.        To assess people’s information needs and provide relevant information to meet those needs.
6.        To enable people to access, identify, appraise and interpret information, to facilitate determination of their own future.
7.        To promote self-management through education and guided support.

 

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with active NMC registration.
  • First level degree in related subject or prepared to work towards this
  • Be willing to undertake Trust CNS role development programme or be able to demonstrate equivalent competencies professional development
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Experience of working in Urology
Desirable criteria
  • Research qualification
  • Level 2 psychological skills training as per recognised course or working towards
  • Advanced Communications Skills Training or working towards
  • Post-basic qualification in cancer/palliative care or relevant subject

Experience

  • Relevant post registration experience, at Band 5 or above, in urology, cancer or palliative care
