Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist in the colorectal surgery team at our Chelsea site. The post holder has a distinct level of responsibility to patients with Lower G.I tumours in providing a comprehensive specialist nursing service to the Royal Marsden NHS Trust, working within a team of advanced practice nurses. The post-holder will have clinical responsibility for patients undergoing diagnosis and surgery for colorectal cancer and assisting with managing side effects and sign-posting to appropriate services.
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and experienced, who enjoys patient contact and working in a multi-disciplinary environment to support the delivery of a quality service. You must be able to demonstrate good communication skills, flexibility, reliability and have an organised approach to work.
Due to the nature of the role, we are looking for a dependable and highly adaptable individual who is able to work independently and has the ability to fit in quickly as part of a team.
Main duties of the job
- To assist in the provision of professional and clinical leadership and expertise in the care of the patient with colorectal cancers, acting as a resource and consultant to provide information and support to patients, carers and staff.
- To lead and contribute to the formulation of policies.
- To lead and contribute to the formulation of patient information.
- To liaise effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary health care team so as to achieve a synchronised specialist service across both sites.
- To provide informal and formal teaching, e.g. academic courses provided by the School of Cancer Nursing and Rehabilitation.

- To sustain a high-quality specialist service for the patient, from diagnosis through all stages of the disease and actively provide optimum liaison and continuity of care.
- To discuss all treatment options, including research-based treatments for colorectal cancers with sensitivity, knowledge and expertise to enable patients to make an informed choice. To act as patient advocate when appropriate and respecting patient confidentiality and privacy with respect for diverse cultural backgrounds and requirements.
- In collaboration with Clinical Nurse Specialist colleagues, to formulate and/or revise relevant policies and to regularly review this following change/implementation. To work within the procedures and policies of the Trust.
- In conjunction with Clinical Nurse Specialist colleagues, to develop assessment tools that will ensure an appropriate level of nursing intervention so that patients with complex needs are referred to the appropriate specialist/s.
- To initiate maintain nurse-led and ‘telephone clinics’ whereby patients are provided with information and support and the problems and needs of patients and their carers are assessed and appropriately channelled and referred to other services as required.
- To initiate, run and evaluate appropriate group support in conjunction with other relevant professional disciplines.

Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registration
- Evidence of on-going professional development
- Qualification in oncology or speciality
- Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
- Recognised teaching qualification
- Evidence of master’s level learning or prepared to work towards
Experience
Essential criteria
- Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or colorectal surgery to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job.
- Experience as a senior staff nurse in oncology or colorectal nursing.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of Surgery for colorectal cancer
- Experience in the colorectal cancer diagnostic pathway
- Experience in Clinical Management
- Evidence of relevant teaching experience
- Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management
- Previous experience of working as a clinical nurse specialist
- Experience of audit and research
Skills Abilities/knowledge
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of effective negotiating and influencing skills
