Job overview

We are currently looking for enthusiastic, motivated and experienced Band 6 Senior Staff Nurses to join the Private Patient Medical Day Unit (PPMDU)at the Royal Marsden in Chelsea. You will need to be a 1st level registered nurse, Demonstrable previous Oncology experience and experience in the administration of IV medications and chemotherapy is essential. Intravenous cannulation and venepuncture are desirable, however full training will be given. In addition you will possess excellent communication skills, be reliable, enthusiastic and an effective team member committed to providing the highest level of service for our patients.

Main duties of the job

The band 6 registered nurse for Private Patients’ (PP) Outpatients is an exciting role, which enables the delivery of a variety of skills within the outpatient department, Granard House (GH) Outpatients and Markus Private Care Centre (PCC), and Infusion (Supportive Therapy) Unit. The main roles and responsibilities include:

To assume personal accountability for nursing care delivered to a patient in accordance with the NMC code of conduct. There is an expectation for post holders:

  • To promote a safe clinical environment for all patients, visitors and staff.
  • To participate in Trust initiatives around infection control and care quality indicators.
  • To assist with any local or Trust initiatives to ensure the continuous improvement of the quality of services and safeguarding of high standards of care.
  • To be aware of all hospital policies and procedures and collaborate with other health care professionals to ensure that these are observed. 
  • To help foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive working environment and maintain staff morale. 
  • To work and support staff in the Infusion Unit, Phlebotomy Room, Central Venous Access Device (CVAD) room, performing venepuncture, cannulation, and accessing PICC’s and Portacaths.

Liaise effectively with members of the multi-disciplinary health care team to achieve a coordinated specialist service across all Trust sites.

To work as senior nurse resource for patients, families, and staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

These responsibilities will be carried out under the guidance of the shift co-ordinator: 

To complete the first level assessment of the patient’s needs to gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs of patients undergoing diagnostic tests for suspected cancer as well as those diagnosed with cancer and to develop a positive, realistic and 
supportive attitude to ensure that the needs of the patient and family are met. This will include:

▪ Checking patients’ vital signs, blood results, patient and height and weight.

▪ Counterchecking patients’ vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment.

▪ Educating patients on their treatment protocol such as indications and side effects.

▪ Ensuring necessary medication and follow up appointments are obtained.

To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.

To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long-term goals or plans.

To plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way.

Education/Qualifications

Desirable criteria
  • Qualification in oncology or speciality
  • Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
  • Recognised teaching qualification
  • Leadership Training

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registration
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • SACT Competent
  • RMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointment

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in managing the deteriorating patient
  • Experience in chemotherapy administration
  • Experience in intravenous drug administration
  • CVAD access, cannulation and venepuncture
  • Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Clinical Management
  • Evidence of relevant teaching experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management
